Re: Tips, Tricks, Suggestion, Experience making laminated plates?

Randolph...right! I found two layers of two-ply and a face veneer to be pretty unstable...but depending what you're constructing...it could work I suppose.

Re: Tips, Tricks, Suggestion, Experience making laminated plates?

exactly Barry... In my experience, I've found that area of the cut wants to "buckle" as opposed to "pivot"...if that makes any sense....and it telegraphs through to the face veneer...I do it to all three sheets of maple...crows feet barely 1/2" I also scrape a bit of the map...

Re: Tips, Tricks, Suggestion, Experience making laminated plates?

My experience..while limited to probably a dozen guitars...so 24 plates..give or take a few rejects..has been quite a learning experience and despite the miscues which was anticipated..pretty enjoyable. Most all of my products come from Joe woodworker. I start with the plain maple 4X8' sheet. Now, t...

well...after checking out the mounting situation.... I don't have it right in front of me..but ..I think the screws are 2" #8's....ahhh...that's a little more beef than I've ever made in a tailblock! :) I think to be safe, it would have to be the full block

bigsby on 335 style with modified centerblock

I have a client, during the construction, wanted the simple stop tailpiece. So, to lighten the load, the plan was to end the center block just after the stop tailpiece and leave that area between the tailpiece and tail block open. Now, he wants to know if adding a bigsby will be a problem. The short...

ES 137 style centerblock construction details

I've had a request to build something along these lines... I've done a bit of research and have come up with only vague details.. Not so much worried about wood choice... more about the actual construction. My understanding is that the center block runs just beyond the stop tailpiece..got it! Now, i...

Well Perry... I'd have to say overall...in the last 10 years or so...there has been a"Boom" of builders coming out of the woodwork. The talent out there is fantastic...I love it....it's inspiring....I'm not complaining!! I don't do trade shows or a ton of marketing, because quite frankly, ...

Re: Veneer project

half inch wedge Barry? Wow...that's adventurous! I take anywhere up to 1/8"...and I suppose you have to take into account...how much relief you need from the veneer crimping and wrinkling etc. based on your mold. I leave the lower bout seam taped (not across...and only with the seam tape) loose...

Re: The Merch table...

as most of us well know...we scrap wood hoarders...guitar maker types...can always find time to glue a few sticks together and do something with it. Now...I enjoy building guitars ...but sometimes...It's just nice to carry out some no-brainer stuff with scraps..glue ..and a half decent template. Now...

Re: Veneer project

Yes...you can get some beautiful woods from Joe's place. I've been doing some laminate archtops ...three ply maple/wood backer so six ply and finally a nice outer figured whatever. This batch is all burl walnut...just for a change..something different. I built a vacuum frame press ...directions at h...

Re: Scraping the binding

My experience is to put a couple of thin clear coats over the color to seal those in before handling the guitar to scrape the bindings. At some point, I've always had to concentrate on building up finish on the bindings to be able to level things out after scraping.

Re: Pin Routers

I posted a few pics in the archtop section...but I'll drag one over here too... This is my latest task for the pin router. I have so many uses for that machine..from template routing..rounding over the greater part of necks....f holes... etc. I can't imagine using the style with the router on the bo...

Re: strap hinge for tailpiece

I've taken a little twist off the beaten path...I think....but same general idea. I used my pin router to create a ebony negative housing for an inexpensive import tailpiece. I just epoxied it in there. I have no experience or theory to back up this fear...but a similar style wood only tailpiece sca...

Re: Geoff's 3rd Archtop Guitar

Geoff...very nice...clean...finish looks great!! I'm not crazy about the cutaway...the horn is a little narrow to my eye...I'd like to see a little more body there...and I'm sure I've made my share of these. I know I'm going to get crushed for saying this...but to my ear...a fuller body..in fact, th...

strap hinge for tailpiece

Does anyone have a bead on a decent strap hinge for archtop tailpiece. I've been looking all over the place and haven't located one that really turns me on. I've used good 'ol Stanley off the shelf before...but ...nahhhh... not going there again. Any help would be great...thanks!!
