Re: Grain Filler

I have not tried Solarez, but I have used Gork's GoodFilla and had good results with it.

Re: Alternative to wood on solid body

Kind of you to say JC, much appreciated. I'm just starting to get back into building again. It'll be a while yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

Re: Alternative to wood on solid body

Aristides makes great guitars, and indeed their construction is somewhat of a trade secret. They have a formula, and they prefer it stays theirs. We can theorize though, and think of some ways to make a guitar without the use of wood. For example my guess is that they are using a carbon fiber shell ...

Absolutely right Ed, I've been messing with it, and found this to be the case. Still, trying to make it work.

Re: Like a foam, or a plaster, or a... imaginary magic space filler... thing.

So the Great Stuff spray foam seems like the perfect thing. I covered parts of the bike with cling wrap, and sprayed the Great Stuff on there. The next day it's ready to carve. But boy, is it messy! It's raining and without a dry shop to do this in, the mess is too much. I'll have to get back to it ...

Re: Like a foam, or a plaster, or a... imaginary magic space filler... thing.

Spray foam seems possible, though potentially messy. My thought was to wrap practically the entire bike in cellophane (cling wrap), and then I could spray the foam on top. If I'm getting the Great Stuff ready to spray cans, which one do I get to give me the most carving density to work with? David, ...

Like a foam, or a plaster, or a... imaginary magic space filler... thing.

I have a project that is not actually guitar-related, but I thought you guys might still have some suggestions, being the rad bunch that you are. Say you have a negative space, of a particularly odd shape, and you need to fill it. Not just fill it, but sort of overfill it, so that you can carve and ...

Re: Can a 3 turbine HVLP gun spray clear without OP?

In my experience just about any finish sprayed through just about any gun turbine or otherwise can lay down nicely with little to no orange peel. There are exceptions of course, but primarily what it comes down to is getting to know your spray setup and the product you're using. However even then, y...

Re: Thinking of quitting building for a long, long while

This thread is really hitting home for me. For those that don't know, I had a marginally successful electric guitar business for seven years, did the NAMM show, had a guitar on the cover of Premier Guitar Magazine, and a few famous artists playing my guitars to some massive audiences. And I still ho...

Re: what scale for drop A??

I'm gonna go a little against the grain here and say that for a stoner band, and I assume we're talking about doom metal here, you actually probably want to just stick with 24-3/4" scale length. I think a huge part of the sound of that music is the Gibson Les Pauls that all those guys seem to p...

Re: Neck joint - LP body, flat (not carved) top, neck angle and FB support

Regarding the idea of using wedges, I don't see any reason why you would have to do it on both sides of the neck on an LP shape body. You could just do it on the treble side, and keep the bass side full-width. Less wedges to make, and the grain will look better on the side that the player sees the m...

Re: Synthetic Fret Boards

Interesting. Whatever tests you do, must be done on real ebony also. Hardness. Tap test. Flexibility. Workability. Thanks Gordon, all points well-taken. And from all that I've heard Indian Rosewood is actually fairly well maintained and sustainable, but of course CITES will have to be changed to al...

Re: Synthetic Fret Boards

My shop partner is currently in the process of acquiring sample synthetic fretboards for some testing. Currently we have Richlite, but we want to get Rocklite as well. We want to also document all of our testing on video, so any suggestions on what kind of tests you would like us to do for the great...
