best way for fretboard's radius: sanding block or jig?
Hi everybody, i'm building my second guitar but unlike the first construction, i want to make the neck. After having studied the different steps of the neck's construction, I can not make a choice regarding the shaping of the fretboard's radius. There is two way to process; the sanding block or the ...

guitar tops : wood grain orientation
Hi I have a question about electric guitar tops (Bookmatched tops). I want to make mine from a live edge and lumber dealer. However, I don't know if there are restrictions about the wood grain orientation (in the thickness) to avoid deformation even if it's glued to the guitar body. Thank you for yo...

it's the "penetrating oil finish" made by Crimson Guitars.
It's on a swamp ash guitar body.

I'm even be able to mark the finish just with little taps with the flat of my nails!!! Do I have to w...

Re: tru oil on neck - rough spot!!
hi, I just went through a shot of steel wool 0000 and the sensation of roughness is gone. It may have finally happened when I wiped out the excess of tru oil during the last coat. Otherwise, I reassure everyone, I did not have the intension to stop at 2 layers. At least 4. I will evaluate at this mo...

tru oil on neck - rough spot!!
Hi, I'm finishing with tru oil an unfinished maple neck and after two coat i find a rough spot, just at the base of the headstock (rear side of the neck). I will feel it when i'll play, it's pretty sure. Before to apply tru oil, i sanded all the neck with 400 grit but i'm affraid that i didn't do it...

Re: maple neck - use different finishing for neck and fretboard
For the fretboard, i think i'm gonns try the SuperClear 9000 WB Polyurethane by Emyech.
In addition, it's a non-yellowing laquer.
I just asking me where a make the junction between the two finis (tru oil / laquer)?

Re: maple neck - use different finishing for neck and fretboard
I have used and continue to use EM 6000 extensively. It’s soft. I buff and polish it by hand. I would not recommend it for the fingerboard. Target Coatings sells a crosslinker for it that may make it tougher, but I have no experience with that. A couple of decades ago, I was under the impression th...

Re: maple neck - use different finishing for neck and fretboard
What a chance!! It's the same lacquer that i'll use for the solid body (EM6000). It will be useful for me to use it for the fretboard. However, EM6000 is an acrylic lacquer, i don't know if it's a hard when dry. Does anybody used it for neck, especially fretboard, and have an experience with it? Bri...

Re: maple neck - use different finishing for neck and fretboard
Ok, so there is two groups here; those who say that the tru oil protects the maple fretboard from stain and those who say no. I made some additional research and it seems that if i want to keep my maple fretboard, i have to maintain it by cleaning up. That's pretty logical. It seems that maple fretb...

maple neck - use different finishing for neck and fretboard
Hi, I’m building my first own guitar and I bought an unfinished maple guitar neck (neck and fretboard). To finish it, I would like to use tru oil. However, maple fretboard needs to be protected by an waterproof layer to avoid dirty stain on the wood. Tru oil is not a real oil because it became hard ...

neck installation - drilling holes
Hi everybody, i'm building my own electric guitar. I have some questions about neck installation, especialy for the drilling. 1- for the solid body, i have to drill the holes larger than the screws but how many? 2- for the neck it's the inverse, i have to drill holes (to avoid wood rupture) smaller ...

fretboard neck finish
Hi everybody, I have two unfinished necks; one maple neck with rosewood fretboard and one maple neck with maple fretboard. Re: finishing a electric guitar
Oups, sorry, i forgot to say that i'm looking for something mat, not gloss.
In addition, i'm looking for something in spray can. I don't have a spray gun.
This is my first guitar so i don't have the full equipment such as a professionnal.
So I have to deal with what is accessible to beginners.

Re: finishing a electric guitar
Ok, so i what to use a mat lacquer in the end, clear to keep the colors obtain by the dye,. It must stay clear with the time. I search for this and there is a lot of lacquer. I guess that some of them are better than the others. Do you have a suggestion on a particular lacquer which is perfect to do...
