Re: Long Hiatus... New Tele Style Guitar

The body is alder. I had a nice rosewood back and side set with some sapwood running through the middle, which was severely cracked. It wasn't suitable for an acoustic so I used it as a cap on the body and made a matching cap for the headstock. The neck is Peruvian Walnut - which is such a joy to wo...

Long Hiatus... New Tele Style Guitar

Hi Everyone. It seems to have been a few years since I posted here. A couple reasons are that my wife has been having a lot of health issues (which have been sorted for the most part) and I was also asked to be a moderator on another guitar forum. So time as been in short supply. Anyway, I though I ...

Re: Guitar Building in Spain

Hope it's okay to post an update in this older thread. Evan ended up being offered an apprenticeship with Stephen Hill. He just got home for a short visit (to renew his visa) after being there for about a year and a half. In that time he has built 5 guitars of his own and 7 guitars for Stephen... hi...

Re: Guitar Building in Spain

The first guitar I built was an electric - for Evan actually. And even though he has a few more guitars and better guitars than the one I built for him he says it's "his baby" and he will never get rid of it. Well he has a new baby now but I know he will still keep the electric I built for...

Re: Guitar Building in Spain

I don't know enough about classical guitars to really answer your questions Randolph... but of Stephen's website he says he builds in the "traditional Spanish method". So I can only assume that's how it was done way back when. Perhaps someone here with more experience with this can pipe in...

Re: Guitar Building in Spain

Evan really hit it off with the instructor and when the course was completed Evan swung a deal to stick around and build a second guitar on his own. He bought materials and rented "bench space" from Stephen and tackled a Flamenco guitar. He's still there and wants to stay even longer. http...

Re: Guitar Building in Spain

At the end of the course they had a little concern where a professional guitarist played all the students' guitars. Here are links to a couple youtube videos that you may find interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkB309uUs0A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1sgSg7-AWQ Evan went with a very m...

Re: Guitar Building in Spain

The course ran from mid September to mid October. Students had a choice of a classical or flamenco guitar. Evan chose a Classical. He picked padauk for the back and sides and cedar for the top. http://i334.photobucket.com/albums/m408/apolloguitars/Building%20Guitars%20In%20Spain/IMG_0500_zpsmfmgwo5m...

Guitar Building in Spain

My son, Evan, graduated from Culinary School last spring but wasn't sure he really wanted to get into that field. So he spent most of last summer working odd jobs here and there while considering his future. He has had a bit of exposure and experience building electric guitars with me in my shop - a...

Re: Home made Fox Style Bender

Well as a bit of an update... I've done a lot of "test" bends and have done some tweaking to the bender. I've also bent my first real set of sides and have an actual guitar started. A lot of other things have come up so it's currently on the backburner... but I'm hoping to get going with i...

Re: Home made Fox Style Bender

No heat from below... only from the heat blanket, which sits directly on top of the wood..

The cherry is 2mm thick, and it's kiln dried.
