Re: Neck Laminations / Deep Penetrating Stain
OK, yeah, I guess that's probably the only real solution. .6mm is 1/42" veneer, which I suppose would have to be pretty glueable. I don't think I'm going to try to pressure cook my own veneer.

Re: Neck Laminations / Deep Penetrating Stain
I've done some experiments with India ink on rosewood, but it just sits on the surface. It doesn't go deeply into the wood. My interest is in making dark black pinstripe laminations contrasted with maple. I'm probably going to be using walnut for the darker laminations, given the base color and avai...

Neck Laminations / Deep Penetrating Stain
I love the look of laminated necks, particularly with tight pinstripe black laminations. However, I don't want to resaw my few pieces of big ebony down for such a detail. I'd prefer to ebonize or stain a more common hardwood for this purpose. The problem with this is that it would still need some am...

Re: Potato Chips
It's not fantastic, but it's not a garage. It's attached to the central air. Being in the mid-Atlantic, control will always be a struggle. We get some real extremes here. There's a dehumidifier in there year round, and most of the wood doesn't really move much at all. This one set seems to have some...

Re: Potato Chips
It's a bookmatched set, and they both chip in the same direction. So, I guess when it gets into a guitar, they'll be opposite twists. I guess that could work itself out. With a little longitudinal bending around the curvature of a rim, I suppose it might just stay flat. Maybe I could sandwitch some ...

Potato Chips
I have a beautiful mahogany back set with just the craziest potato chipping. I've been watching it in humidity controlled shop for a couple of years, and this thing snaps back and forth like you wouldn't believe. It's kind of fun to watch. It doesn't take any real effort to bend it flat. Just a litt...

Re: Practice Wood - Archtop Tops and Backs
Yeah, it looks like a 2x10 would be sufficinet in actual dimensions, and it looks like my local hardware store stocks it. I might be able to get a pair of tops out of a 2x10x10. And maybe I can cobble together enough 5/4 - 6/4 maple for a 3 piece back. That ought to work.

Practice Wood - Archtop Tops and Backs
I'm going to make my first attempt at carving an archtop pretty soon. I don't want to risk my good billets on a process I haven't been through before. I'd rather try to make an archtop out of budget wood first, just to go through all of the steps once before I commit more expensive resources to the ...
