Re: The "Reclaimed Materials" Challenge- discuss rules here
This is probably a stupid question, but how about wood that was previously used as a tree? :) Specifically, I'm thinking of some cherry I resawed from a an ornamental tree I had to take down due to worm damage, or some apricot that my local power company harvested in the process of butchering my tre...

Re: Which material or substance should I use to mold and make Panpipe?
If you use something other than wood, it won't sound like wood. That doesn't mean it will sound bad, but not like wood. The pan flutes I have are South American. They're made from something that looks like a thick reed, and lashed together with string. Maybe you could use some sort of metal pipe or ...

Re: Using a router to joint wood.
What level of effort should I go through to laminate some 2x6 (3 pieces thick)? If you're planning on laminating them, you should go to whatever effort it takes to get the surfaces flat and smooth... no tool marks. I've got a simple sled I made years ago; 3/4" particle board base, oak rails, a...

Re: Pronunciation guide?
If we include both pronunciation and common name <--> genus/species we could burn through at least a couple of threads! I agree that pronunciations can be confusing... especially in print. I always defaulted to "wenj" for wenge, but it seems like most folks in the know use "wen gee&qu...

Re: Bending a barbecue igniter?
I think you want the element to contact the inside of the pipe pretty solidly to transfer heat. Take what I say with a grain of salt, because I'll be Bob uses his bending iron a lot more than I have mine... but I specifically didn't want the hot spot that I thought would be created if the element t...

Regarding MIMF & MIMF-TNG discussions and overlap
I think I read at first that the current MIMF discussions won't be ported over to this board, but then I think I read on MIMF from Deb that that was still being discussed. I'm still somewhat unclear on whether discussions here are going to be dumped when MIMF-TNG goes live. I don't know how many of ...

Re: Bending irons
You can also get concrete tile backer board, which works well. I didn't bother with any backer on mine and it hasn't shown any desire to burst into flames yet - but you never know. The concrete tile backer board is what I used. You can see in the pic that it cracked from clamping it in the vise... ...

Re: Bending irons
Here's my bending iron... but it hasn't been getting a workout doing beautiful work like Arnt's. :) It's the fat end of an aluminum baseball bat with a flattened barbeque starter and filled with BBs. The backer is tile backerboard left over from some remodeling... very heat resistant but I need to s...

Re: Poor Grounding Question - Stainless Steel
I don't know if the stainless is causing your grounding problem... as Mark suggested... a volt/ohm meter can help you determine that. Stainless steel is about at the opposite end of the spectrum from copper and silver with regards to conductivity. I'd post a link to a chart that shows the difference...
