Re: 1965 Hofner violin bass neck reset
This strikes me as a good time to see if you could add a threaded insert/machine screw to the neckjoint. I don't think the collectors would be too keen Jeffrey! I had considered a neck dowel through to the end block like a banjo or a resonator but it would probably change the McCartney tone that th...

Re: 1965 Hofner violin bass neck reset
But Steve, aren't we heating HHG to around 140F to use it? Therefore I thought it's softening point would be below that!

1965 Hofner violin bass neck reset
I've been renovating a 65 hofner 500/1 bass and I am about to re unite the neck and the body. The original joint is hot hide glue and these old Hofners are known for being easy to remove and re set the neck. The joint is a tapered pocket joint but not dovetailed so it has very little mechanical stre...

Re: Ageing a restoration sunburst
I doubt anyone has shot nitro lacquer on cars in decades, so you'll have to look elsewhere. I used to use celullose in the 80's when I worked for a sign firm so you got me thinking there Mario. I just checked some auto suppliers websites and it is still readily available in the UK. Are you sure it'...

Re: Ageing a restoration sunburst
Nathan, your friend needs to look into how much of it is original and date it properly because they're very collectable at the moment!

Re: Ageing a restoration sunburst
Well, I found some nitro furniture lacquer and the burst is finished, no clear coats yet and the neck's not glued. I just wanted to see if it looked right! I'll put some amber in a couple of the next coats to yellow the freshly scraped binding. I'll cut back the clear and polish by hand and then let...

Clay, I understood that Fender used automotive lacquer in the early days!

Re: Ageing a restoration sunburst
Thanks for the tips everybody.
I'm assuming here that a nitro celullose lacquer from an auto finishing supplier will be suitable, they are probably lacking the plasticisers anyway?
then I'll probably play it, and lend it to people and let it age like it should.

Ageing a restoration sunburst
I have a 65 Hofner violin bass and due to it being stripped and varnished years back, I am restoring it. This guitar is complete and original (except the finish) so I plan on applying a nitro sunburst but then I would like to relic it. I have recently read that freezing the dry finish will cause the...

Thanks Waddy,
I do mean hot hide glue!

Hide Glue Concern
I'm new to hide glue, I've just used it on a pair of Greek Baglamas. I'm doing a neck reset on my 65 Hofner violin bass and I should realy use hide glue again I guess. My concern is, that my glue brush from the last job (about 2 months ago) is soft and rubbery not hard and brittle. Any Ideas? Keith.

Re: Building the Hofner "Beatle Bass"
Perhaps they used all that lovely old gear to build the re-issues.
I agree that cross head screws were used in the 70's, but certainly not in 65 by Hofner.

Re: Building the Hofner "Beatle Bass"
I think the date on the label is 84, This is a 65 re-issue being built, cross head screws on the control panel also give it away!

Re: Greek Baglama
Thanks Christ, I appreciate that, and I have come to realise that Greeks love to use anything but the real name for things! My wife and I are known as the "Patsourakia" because the old lady that lived in our house before we bought it (many years before) loved beetroot! Keith. P.S. I'm bein...

Re: Building the Hofner "Beatle Bass"
I've just acquired a 1965 one of these in a very sad state, the neck has to come off so this video has been very helpful!
Wish me luck!
