Re: Double top all-wood acoustic
Hi, Ken. The outside top (2mm thick) is the one machined. The inside is just a thin, 0.5-0.6mm, piece of spruce laminated over the holes. I built the first DT in 2001 and since then many dozens of Nomex and all-wood tops. I never had any problem with delamination. The way I designed my tops, there'...

Re: Double top all-wood acoustic
Hello Frederich, Serendipituos timing here, as I've been both reading up on the tech and visualizing the process to possibly apply to my own work. I tried a nomex top @12 years ago. It delaminated on me before I even got it strung up. So I re-topped it with a conventional top and shelved that idea. ...

10 back issues of American Lutherie
Mostly from the early to mid 90's. If there is any interest, let me know here and what a fair price might be. I'd like to sell them in one bundle via PayPal. I'll edit post to add issue #'s a bit later.

Re: resawing
Update: we got the fence fine tuned to the point where we could slice a fat 3/16", with a +/- 1/64" variation from front to back and top to bottom. I don't know about you guys, but I can live with that! We practiced on a 1" thick 7.75X24 piece of sitka that I had; the first cut was a ...

resawing
I've located a garage full of split old growth WRC billets that have been sitting for 20 years. When I mentioned this to my dad, I told him my bandsaw had a solid frame and the opening was not big enough to resaw these. He asked me how big of an opening I needed, and then he gathered up some scrap m...

Re: steaming out small dents & dings
I used to steam out dents with the tip of a clothes iron and a damp paper towel, but it always discolored the shellac. The Milburn tutorial in the FAQ section instructs to put a small dab of pumice on the FP pad and work it into the ding or scratch. I tried it and it works. I have heard that Tom Hum...

Hand planes
I've got old yard sale variety planes that I've worked with over the years. I've never really bothered to tune them up; I just keep a decent edge on the blades and use them to a certain point generously outside my desired dimension, and then switch to scraper then abrasives. After reading for the 10...

Re: Taxes and tonewood inventory
One thing that I should have mentioned: I'm coming off of a 5 year layoff. I let my fictitious name lapse and my EIN has been inactive the whole time. So.... I basically view this as starting from scratch, financially speaking. I understand the whole short term vs. long term thing. I'm thinking cash...

Re: Taxes and tonewood inventory
All very useful info, THANKS! So....basically, if I switch to cash accounting, -everything- becomes a running expense as it is bought, correct? If so, can the same be said for capital expenditures like, say, a new table saw? I understand why my account advises to do it the way he has; he's thinking ...

Taxes and tonewood inventory
Kinda funny how I used to post on this forum when it was under Deb's hand, I was a rank beginner and hobbyist, and now I've actually made a couple of dollars here and there... ;) Anyhow, in years past our accountant has advised that when I purchase tonewoods, to not deduct the total purchase w...

Converting an existing guitar to just or pure intonation
A friend of mine has asked if I could convert an existing guitar's fretboard to just or pure intonation for his own use in plain and Gregorian chant. He is a priest in an urban parish in a blighted neighborhood, so this will be a freebie. I remember listening to John Schneider's Lou Harrison album b...
