I built the fat boy about six years ago. Built it exactly to plans as it was my first. Sound was rich and deep. Mine was full maple with Alaskan yellow cedar soundboard and engleman spruce bracing.

Any thoughts on red oak? Maybe white oak?

I just replaced the nut and saddle with deer antler on my son's guitar. Other than smelling strong when worked, I have not had any trouble with it. Softer than bone, like was said above. Cool grain variations.
