Re: Fretting a uke

I'm red faced, after checking the stew Mac catalog, and seeing the T profile for the small gauge I went back to have a closer look at what I received, the manner in which the end was cut fooled me, the width is so narrow you barely see that's it's a T. The tang width is .025 while the fret is .053 t...

Fretting a uke

I just got the uke fret wire and in cross section unlike the normal T it's more like an L.
This means the crown of the fret will not be centred to the fret slot.
I can offset either toward or away from the nut,
coin toss or is there a correct direction to offset?

Soprano uke, top and back thickness OPTIMUM Values

I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts on OPTIMUM top and back thickness, tops either spruce Or Mahogany.
I'm fairly certain this is one of several critical dimensions.
Anyone know what Martin use?
Thanks

Thanks Alan, always like reading your replies, doesn't mean I understand them, but still enjoy.
I'm gonna experiment in very small increments. And I'm gonna read your reply again ... And again..

Wolf Tone

Basic question what is a wolf tone? A recent build (D-28 copy) has a peculiarity , playing notes on the first string, starting at the 10 fret, and doing my best to use even pressure, the notes all have the same volume until I reach the F# (14th fret) and it is SUBSTANTIALLY louder, the G at the 15 t...

Re: Christmas guitar project

Patrick, this is a great idea. Here's my question, these are rather high end instruments, do you have a way of screening the recipients? The preference would be for dedicated individuals to get these instruments. My daughter is a primary school music teacher and teaches (among other things) ukulele ...

Update re conversion thickness planer to thkns sander

A few years ago (page 6 of this section) I advised of my conversion of a thickness planer to a sander. Someone suggested that the router speed controller ($30) at Harbor Freight would be a big help as the VERY high RPMs were the only major drawback. Good news .. It works, money very well spent, and ...

Re: Need opinions from players

A puzzle to me is the lack of popularity of a "Four String Guitar" not a tenor, but tuned to the first four strings of a six string and having a regular six string scale length.great for beginners or uke players wanting to try guitar. My first instrument was a uke, and was learned chording...

Re: My first build - where to start

Joel, one other thought, somthing I wish I had done, keep a journal, with as much information as possible, such as helpful website or threads. Details on each build such as thicknesses, materials, special facts etc. wish I had such info from earlier builds. Also tracking dollars spent and time taken...

Your first build - how'd it go

Recent posts talk about their first build, weve all been there. What do you remember mostly of your first masterpiece? In my case I decided to totally finish the inside, to let the sound waves reflect rather than get absorbed. FYI never repeated this in subsequent builds. I still have this guitar, k...

Re: My first build - where to start

Joel Gotta say the folks on this forum never cease to amaze me. Wish mimf was around when I built my first guitars. Mark said it best, you came to the right place! Negative on a flamenco book but that DVD sounds good. Oh ya on supplementing your income, hmmm, that may be tricky. Last time I went to ...

Re: My first build - where to start

Hey joel welcome, I'm no expert but to answer your question would require .... A book.... You have one of the best but I suggest you look for one or two more, in particular one on Flamenco. Read them and map out a begining strategy. There are a lot of steps and some can be daunting. One way to go is...

Re: Number 100!

Understated elegance, really nice. I'm about to start #15 with the full expectation of the usual hiccups and shoulda coulda's. it hasn't got easy yet. Any tips from a centenarian? Or better yet maybe the single most important thing building 100 guitars may have taught. I'd invite any other "GC ...

Re: BRAZILIAN ROSEWOOD TO BE ILLEGAL

Well I read the story of the confiscated bows and then read the comments by interested readers. The issue with the bows was the ivory tip of the bows, ok i get it, love elephants, BUT how did trees in brazil get in the same catagory as my third favorite animal? I know I'm missing something here. I u...

Re: BRAZILIAN ROSEWOOD TO BE ILLEGAL

Just curious, does anyone know of a test to determine types of rosewood, and just how does one determine wether the wood is from brazil. Just saw a guitar with a Madagascar rosewood back, the chocolate swirls looked very much like BRW I've seen. If the primary test is visual does this mean you also ...

Re: Truss rod problem

Just an FYI I just had an experience with screw extractors where one end is a hardened cutter and the other end a threaded cone that is screwed in reverse and when it in as far as it can go, you continue the counterclockwise rotation and the screw is extracted. I was extremly skeptical (the kit of 4...

Re: When to stop thicknessing a back?

This thread is really fascinating, not necessarily to affect my builds but to better understand the results. I'm wondering now, is there a way to tell if a previous build has a live or non live back. And does the fact that when I first complete a guitar (all ss) and string it up, it is always utter ...

Re: The Everyman Guitar

Congrats on a beautiful build.
My favorite aspect of guitars is the female influence on the shape when viewed from the front or rear, and your convergence of the bevels in a beautiful curve when viewed from the sides takes this a step further.
