Re: Well wishes for 2025 in and out of the shop!
Good wishes and hale body to you and everyone here for this next year! My instrument projects get shuffled around, but between home improvements and gigging, I hope to finally get after a long-planned set of Sutton Hoo-inspired lyres. Made of local hardwoods, one for my music history class, one for ...

Re: Double X Bracings
Alan, I think I’ve seen you (and certainly others) refer to ‘modern’ vs traditional sound. My ears aren’t all that discerning, but could modern be maybe described as more crisp and centered?

Re: Cookie Tin Class
A variety of tins. Many were Danish butter cookies. This took place at family camp associated with the West Denmark Lutheran church, so the Danish cookies were not an accident.

Cookie Tin Class
Just finished up teaching a class at a local family camp. The picture is two of the students with finished banjos. We had about ten total over the three days of camp. I did some prep work ahead of time. Some made a simple 2-string “strum stick” some made 5-string banjos, some strung them as ukes. Th...

I also like that significant round-over on the binding. Beautiful work.

Re: Re-hairing a renaissance bow?
Gotcha. I watched an acquaintance rehair his bow several years ago - lots of steps I wouldn’t have imagined - a total disaster makes sense.

Complete disaster in what way? I don’t quite believe I’d ever do it myself, but I’m curious.

Re: Silvertone parlor back loose.
Thanks Barry, that was my other thought. I’ve flossed the neck joint on a real junker for practice a while back.
Any advice about getting into the transition where the glue still holds?
Carl, that thought occurred to me too. I’ll mull it over while I get a couple other projects checked off.

Silvertone parlor back loose.
I've inherited a 60s Silverstone parlor guitar. The back has begun to separate from the binding on the upper bout, treble side. Brown glue residue from the factory is visible, and it's overlaid with what appears to be PVA from a previous repair attempt. Pretty crusty. Would vinegar be my best bet fo...

Re: Best cam clamp wood
In a batch of a dozen lightweight clamps made of poplar, one has split. And it turned out that had tiny inclusion hidden in the wood. The poplar (aspen, not tulip poplar) was what was on hand. If I were making more, I'd probably go with a plywood.

Re: Paisley Ukulele
The pattern also reminds me of Scandinavian rosemåling as much as paisley. I’m so used to ornate instruments being full of inlay and hardware that it takes a little mindset adjustment. Painting on the soundboard isn’t new certainly, but resides in a different space in my mind. I like it. I might hav...

I also vote for Ukalimba. I’d be very interested to hear it with strings.
I’ve got a few thrift store ukes that might be just right for this kind of treatment.

Re: For a crafty friend - homemade fretless acoustic basses 85% reused material
What kind of price are you hoping for, and how many instruments? An acquaintance of mine moved a number of instruments that were certainly playable, but had a clear folksy homemade look. No attempt to be a “standard” axe. Something more like the cigar box world. We are in very rural WI, but with a r...

Re: Uh-oh. Quick fix?
Well it worked. I got into the school shop on my lunch break. With only a drill press and a dull hand saw available I made a workable though huge and clunky piece. Some people in the audience got a kick out of it.
Thanks.
Thanks.
