Re: Guitar amps
Valve Wizard. When you out grow Merlin's web site, his books on guitar preamps and powersupplies take it farther. As a disclaimier, I was a proof reader for his books. AX84 P1 and P1Ex theory documents do a good job of circuit analysis for a specific amp, and are deep enough to transport to other ci...

Re: Methylene Chloride Dangers
Methylene chloride, now that brings back fond childhood memories. It was the "safe" alternative to chloroform in the HPLC columns Dad used at work. He brought the used stuff home to use as solvent on whatever. When my sister was 7, she got an oil plaint set, Dad showed her how to use the c...

Re: 1900 Hamlin Mason sound board
Yeah, I know about the uprights, we have burned a few of them, back in the days when my brother was a piano tech, kind of makes you feel like Napoleon in Moscow. I would expect it to be above average as well, given the quality of the instrument it was removed from. I don't currently have a pic of it...

1900 Hamlin Mason sound board
My dad has the sound board from a 1900 Hamlin Mason grand piano in the shop. It was cracked, so replaced in a major rebuild of the instrument 2-3 years ago. Neither of us have plans or inspirations for it, and we both would rather see it used to make something that sings again rather then trash it. ...

Re: Mistakes made while building early guitars
The only one I have not yet recovered from was choosing to bind my first body, without bothering to read anything about how to do bindings. I usually get away with just "going for it", but that was 2005 and the body is still wrapped in a T-shirt waiting for me to finish it as is, or swallo...

Re: Pickup types
I believe it is Ibanez that use F(front) for the neck, and R(rear) for the bridge. Also if the pickups are intended to be a set, then the bridge will likely have a higher DC resistance. The strings move less the closer you get to a fixed point (nut or saddle) so a pickup closer to the saddles, will ...

"Note: to discharge a capacitor, using the tip of a insulated screwdriver (plastic handle), short the two terminals of the capacitor together." Expect to lose some metal from the tip of the screwdriver and shaft it the cap is well charged. So don't use your good SnapOn screwdrivers for this

Re: Why Is Thickness Sander Motor Stalling
If it is not TEFC construction, I would look at dust having jammed the start winding switch closed, but also if it were built with shielded rather then sealed bearings, the bearings would be jammed with dust. Actually, the more I think about it, it sounds like it is never getting up to speed enough ...

Re: saddle design
If the strings are terminated with a tail piece like an arch top, then it would seem to me that saddle width would be an important in what and how energy is transfered to the top. If the strings terminate on the bridge itself, then all the energy at the bridge end of the string is going to end up in...

Re: String through instead of top loading -- Thoughts?
I prefer string through for a couple of reasons. One being that my sense of engineering aesthetics is not pleased by a string mounting that distorts the bridge and tries to rip it off the body ( I know guitars are not race cars, but I get kind of obsessive with stress management) Another being that ...

would a rotary switch work? You can get them with up to 12 poles, but with adjustable stops so you can block off unused poles. Up to 4 throws if complex switching is your thing

Black Locust, Robinia pseudoacacia is an invasive species in BC, so cutting it for lumber would be a good thing. I have an octave mandolin neck made from cherry with a locust FB. Its yellowness might not be aesthetically pleasing to you, it seems to be a bit polarizing, but it is hard enough

Re: ...all this earthing stuff..
whether you went overboard or not depends on how electrically noisy your environment is and how much noise you can tolerate. Some people find commercial guitars unplayable in some environments because of their lack of shielding and poor grounding/earthing scheme. If what you have done is well execut...

Best of luck Deb. The new USDA zone map is out this week, bet you moved up zone, maybe just a half zone (semizone?). So here's to garlic, those who love it enough to cultivate its best varieties, and those who love it enough to buy the best varieties.
