Re: GAL Convention
I haven't been on mimf for quite a long time, having been busy negotiating some of life's sharper left and right turns, but running into folks at the convention reminded me of how much I enjoy the forum and miss the members. I plan to check in more often. It was really great to see folks again and g...

Re: Jeffrey Elliott Chip carving Rosette advice
Joseph, If I recall correctly, Chih-Wei Liu made an entry at 1:38am, Feb 14, 2008 EST in the mimf thread "Classical rosettes, Any ideas for different styles?" that might provide some useful information, though not what you asked about. He said that denser soundboard materials such as sitka...

Waddy,
I went out to the Vermont Coatings website, but found nothing about a Polywhey formulation specifically for instruments. Is this something one has to write to them about?

Re: FP without oil
I French polish without oil. You have to pay more attention to pressure/speed and wetness than when you use oil. The alcohol more or less becomes the lubricant. I don't use oil because 1) I found that oil can cause blotches in cedar tops, and 2) I learned to French polish from Cyndy Burton who does ...

I heard that someone used this technique on the master recording of the old Rice Crispies commercial soundtrack and completely ruined it.

Beautiful! I love the stripe in the top. You do such good work. It's always inspring to look at. Sounds good too. THanks for posting the sound link.

Re: Copying a guitar without removing the top: Is it possible?
I've had pretty good luck taping a piece of paper to the top and using a pair of tiny tiny supermagnets like Radio Shack sells. Stick one on the inside, holding it in place with one on the outside resting on the surface of the top. Move the pair until the inside one runs into the edge of a brace, th...

Re: A Parlor Guitar by Mark Swanson
Beautiful work (as usual), Mark! That's a splendid set of mahogany. I just finished up a restoration job on a 20's era Stromberg-Voisinet parlor guitar that really has me hot to build a copy. Wonderful little instrument with a definitive blues sound to it. It turned out to be a real work stopper in ...

Hi Randy,
I am not sure if this was from the same thread, but if you search on

you will get a web page address that has been referenced here before. It's a list of good photography practices.

Re: Santos Hernandez plans?
Simon, Be aware that the Urlik book shows very small drawings of the general bracing pattern - no details about exact angles, lengths, etc. I think it is still a great book. Other dimensions are given such as scale length, body length, widths, depths, neck depths, etc. Ross, I look forward to follow...

Re: Santos Hernandez plans?
Sheldon Urlik's book "A Collection of Fine Spanish Guitars", documents 3 Santos Hernandez instruments, two classicals made with Brazilian rosewood, one from 1923 and the other from 1930. The 3rd instrument is a cypress flamenco. It uses a slanting lower harmonic bar and parallel fan braces...

Re: Domestic Woods for Fingerboards
I am very impressed with katalox, which is a Mexican wood, so it meets the North American continent requirement. It has a Janka hardness of 3690, is dark brown and very dense, and very smooth. I have made one fingerboard with it about 6 years ago. I happened to see the guitar a few days ago and the ...

I heard an interview with this band on the local npr station yesterday. I just got a note from an old high school friend saying that Peter Bergman of the Firesign Theatre passed away. Here is a link to some info about him: http://articles.latimes.com/2012/mar/10/local/la-me-peter-bergman-20120310 Robin Williams once described the FIresign Theatre's work an an "audi...

Re: Semi-Hemispherical fret work
Hmmm, I was certain it was Howard that talked about doing them on the sander, but I have a number of crystal clear memories that turn out to be wrong these days. As to terminology, I don't doubt that he finds fault with "semi-hemispherical".
