RIP Harry Fleishman

For those that haven't seen this elsewhere, Harry passed away about a month ago. I had the privilege of first meeting and speaking alongside Harry at the GAL convention in 2008. We kept in regular touch ever since and every so often since we have bumped into each at various shows. In the last few ye...

Re: Please educate me on headless bass bridge/tuner hardware

ABM or Hipshot would be a goto. However, if you are just making one bass and the price is the touch point, you might be able to find a suitable set on eBay. I've not seen any of the Ali Express stuff nor the singles from Solo. Dave King was making his own and Ola Strandberg went that way too. I have...

Re: CE marking for electric guitar

CE marking is applicable within the EEA. The EEA links the EU member states and three European Free Trade Association (EFTA) states. The legislation requires that products are safe but does not mandate marking. This is a good intro and has a table of applicable standards one can look up - http://www...

Re: Low Impedance pickup - prototype

If you a looking for a low impedance pickup that is magnetic but small, might I suggest you look at variable reluctance gear teeth sensors. The downside is the price and size in that one must place them close to the bridge such that the string excursion stays within the sensing range. The plus side ...

Re: Low Impedance pickup - prototype

These current transformer based pickups always sound more trebly and less bassy. There is going to be a d/dt limitation at the bass end of the spectrum anyway but with an increased high end it simply sounds less bassy, but they do give a very clean output. The tonal aspects can be manipulated with p...

Re: What makes a pickup hot?

Pickups are an interesting can of worms :) To answer the question, a hotter pickup is one that has a higher output voltage. What makes this happen is either a strong magnetic field hence a great induction of voltage in the coil, and/or more turns on the coil. However, there is no panacea and there i...

Re: Hexaphonic Pickup Project

A coil does not act like an antenna but it will pickup some EM field radiation, but in an entirely different manor to an antenna. However, the signal that is picked up is not common mode. As I said, if the amplifier is close to the coil (you mentioned in the pickup with the coil), then the common mo...

Re: Hexaphonic Pickup Project

Some comments in no particular order... If you are matching resistors, the tolerance (1%, 0.1% etc) is not relevant other than making your matching task easier. You should pick a resistor for it's noise generation characteristics (thermal noise, boltzmann etc) and then match. Differential input ampl...

Re: toasted solid state, is this beyond repair?

I think the lower rating will be ok until there is no load connected, so best use the high rating. I also noticed that the output transistors and those 0.33 5W resistor are only just about ok rating wise for the rated output power but it would be possible to drive the output hard enough to fry them....

Re: toasted solid state, is this beyond repair?

Probably not. These were right out of towers and I didn't look further. It would depend on how it is used. Although some amps do power the driver stages from the main rail, not all do. I'd need to look at the schematic to get a better idea.

Re: toasted solid state, is this beyond repair?

In the old days, the by word for the books was rather vulgar, but that's another story. For future reference, http://ia700804.us.archive.org/15/items/TowersInternationalTransistorSelector/Towers-TowersInternationalTransistorSelector.pdf is what you need but it is old, so any new transistors won't be...

Re: toasted solid state, is this beyond repair?

Once the carbon has been removed, I would use a PCB lacquer.

You should be able to infer most of the track layout from the component layout and schematic but it sounds like you won't need to.

Have fun and good luck.

Re: toasted solid state, is this beyond repair?

You'll have to start by finding a schematic and a picture. I can't see any part ids on the board silk screen so a schematic alone won't be enough. The pattern of carbon looks like there was a fire followed by an explosion. The heat might well have ruined the copper traces too and possibly made the P...

As it happens I don't have an eraser or programmer but I know many that do.

I always star connect the earth/ground connections and connect the cavities. In many cases one can get away without the star or the cavity shielding, but it is more likely to bite you than if you take the extra steps.

Production wiring gives some of us work :)

added to which proportionally more of the coil is in a weaker field. Capacitance reduction is the big factor for scatter winding and although hand winding tends to be more scattered for a non-scattered wind than a machine would pickup, there is still a significant difference between a hand tight win...

Re: Variable reluctance sensor

27 years ago I fitted 4 of these little sensors to my first bass. They still work just fine. Super high output. I have then about an inch and a half from the bridge to give a very bright output that I then post process to suit. They also tend to have to be close to the string which precludes them be...
