Re: Advise on filling/repairing end grain cracks
Thanks again for all the responses. As I said in my original post this is already a body. Its not a board I can make other things out of. Nor do I want to. It still has a value to me as a test body or whatever. Its just not "customer grade". Id rather try and fix it than use it as "fi...

Re: Using Tru-oil spray with regular tru-oil
Thanks David! Thats exactly the info I was looking for. I do alot with Tru-oil, but never over a dyed finish. Was hoping the spray would create a barrier so I can apply the rest by hand. We'll see what happens on the test pieces.

Re: Advise on filling/repairing end grain cracks
Thanks for the replies so far. I realize this body is shot. Ive already made a new body for the customer. This one still has value to me however. So, IF you were to attempt to do a fix of some sort what would it be?
Thanks!

Using Tru-oil spray with regular tru-oil
Has anyone ever used both spray tru-oil and regular wipe on together? I have a dyed top I would like to use tru-oil on. I normally use wipe on, but i'm hesitant this time because I don't want to screw up the dye job. FYI I used Trans Tint dye mixed w/ water. I was thinking id use spray Tru-oil to bu...

Re: Single fret buzz Mystery
Got my Hybrid Steinberger bass all assembled, sounds great except for 23rd fret on the G string, which "frets out" with an anemic buzz like a reluctant fart. The 22nd fret has a tiny buzz and 24th no buzz at all. I can't see any evidence that any of the last three frets have lifted, and s...

Advise on filling/repairing end grain cracks
I have a 2 piece body im making out of walnut. After rough cutting my body all was well. After cleaning up with router some decent sized cracks appeared. These cracks are well in from the end of the board the body was made from. Its like the were inside the board. Masked in a cloak of walnutness. Im...

Re: Fernandes 401 Sustainer Kit
Is anyone familiar with these units? I've been trying to get Fernandes to answer a couple questions, but they don't seem to want to reply so I thought I would try a couple other places. I bought one of these kits on ebay a few years ago with the intent of building a guitar around it some day. So th...

Re: Question about changes to my guitar before I pull every thing out
I am not sure if you know how the two individual stacked controls will work. be aware that they work this way- if you set the tone control at a mid-point setting, and then switch that control to volume mode, the tone control will NOT keep that mid-point setting but will switch to full on when you g...

Re: Microphonic pickup help
Hey Steve, I'm chiming in a bit late to this story but I'm wondering why the pups squealed when you wired direct to the amp? I presumed you had removed from the guitar when you did this which would (again presumably) mean the rings were removed. Or were they still in the guitar and you just by-pass...

Re: LR Baggs CTRL-X Preamp - Mono Only?
If your never going to run to two amps or need the ability to run two signals for recording I dont see any issue. For me I always want to have every option I can at the touch of a button. If you didnt want the button, you could drill a hole the size of you smallest allen wrench in the PG. You could ...

Re: Short-scale Flamed-Maple Bass Guitar
Looks great. I love everything about it.
For the finish, did you hand rub the burst, then seal that up with the Tru-oil? What did you use for the burst finish? Ive tried this before and got a lot of bleeding within the color coat when I applied the Tru-oil.

Re: Microphonic pickup help
I am one of those who believes that mounting the pickups directly to the body brings in a tone improvement. It seems to bring in a better tone with more woodiness, and sustain and just more "tone" somehow. If these pickups are that sensitive to the way they are mounted, I'd consider givin...

Re: Microphonic pickup help
Just wanted to follow up with everyone and let you know how things turned out. After some back and forth with Dimarzio, we figured out the metal rings I was using were amplifying the magnetic field and making the guitar microphonic. I switched over to plastic and solved the issue straight away. Than...

Re: Microphonic pickup help
Yes I realize that you sent them back once, but I would complain again. I bet they didn't even mess with them, at least it sounds like they didn't. They must be able to check a pickup before they send it away! It isn't your wiring. The wiring will either work or it won't, but it doesn't cause that ...

Re: Microphonic pickup help
Where did you get them? I bet that the company didn't do anything to them. If they are that bad you should be able to connect them directly to an amp without even installing them in a guitar and they should show the same results. I'd take them back again. You have a bad product and there is no reas...

Microphonic pickup help
I have 2 new Dimarzio pickups that are wildly microphonic. A Transition and a Breed. With my volume full up on the guitar it just squeals and howls. I can talk into them. Every knock or bump is LOUD. Loud or quiet amp volume, it doesnt matter. I called up Dimarzio and they had me return them. I got ...

Re: Neck from hell, and what to do about it
John, I always use a tiny bit of window caulking at both ends of my TR slot. It keeps the TR from vibrating but is flexible when adjusting the rod itself. You always want to have a little bit of tension on the rod anyway which helps avoid rattle. You could use CA since your shims are not a structura...

Re: Headstock decal
Chris. I use vinyl decals cut at my local sign shop. You can get any color you can think of. Theres even a guy in Japan that cut some for me with a Abalone look (see second pic). I typically just stick then over the top of the finish. Sometimes i'll clear over them. It takes a bit more clear to bury...

Re: Steve Benfords Surfmaster semihollow
Very cool! That pretty much nails how a surf guitar should look like. I have planned to build one myself and now that you've finished this one, mine will look like a copy of yours. Not quite, actually. Mine will have a turquoise sparkle finish and a P90 at the neck, but the body resembles yours and...
