Re: How dry doe a 3-4mm 'veneer' top need to be?
Thanks, Apparently it's been drying for the best part of a year, and it will probably be the best part of another year before I use it, I've heard that 1 year per inch of thickness is a good rule of thumb, so 1.5 years for 3.5mm sounds like plenty, so hopefully I won't have any problems there. Craig...

How dry doe a 3-4mm 'veneer' top need to be?
Hi all, If I were to glue a 3-4mm walnut top onto a 40mm thick piece of ash, does it really matter if the walnut has not been properly dried? (the ash will of course be dry). I can't see that such a thin top could warp if it's well bonded to the ash...? **could moisture cause any issues with finishi...

First Build Complete (Chambered Ash & Mahogany Electric)
Hi all, I've had quite a bit of spare time over the last 3 weeks and so within that timeframe i've designed and completed my first build. Being my first attempt, and having very high standards (i.e. not wanting to end up with a mediocre guitar) I decided to buy a warmoth neck and just concentrate on...

Re: How wet should ebony binding be for hot-pipe bending?
--- So what I ended up doing was baking the metal pipe in the oven. Oven on full heat (220 degrees Celsius) ended up being pretty spot on and upon taking the pipe out of the oven, it worked well with a freshly wetted strip of ebony for about 5 minutes, after which the pipe had cooled a bit and the ...

Re: Best glue for filling gaps in ash, with tru-oil finish?
thanks, I'll see how I get on with filling with ebony, Bryan, you mention another point I'm concerned about - I intend to round over the binding a lot, so the edge of the guitar will be really chamfered with the binding creating a black line within that chamfer (as opposed to forming a sharp solid e...

Re: Best glue for filling gaps in ash, with tru-oil finish?
Thanks, that had occurred to me - however, this would leave the binding slightly inconsistent in it's width, i.e. it would look wider where adjacent gaps have been filled with ebony, which I think might look pretty messy? Basically, I haven't done that great a job since it was my first time bending ...

Best glue for filling gaps in ash, with tru-oil finish?
I'm mid way through my first build, and having just put some ebony binding around an ash body, there are a few thin gaps which need filling. I've got plenty of ash sanding dust, and have tried mixing it with a few different glues. The below picture shows my 4 attempts, which, from left to right are:...

Re: How wet should ebony binding be for hot-pipe bending?
Thanks, For any other beginners who stumble across this thread looking for info, I will answer my own original question - With the 2mm thick strips of ebony, I wetted them thoroughly just before bending, i.e. used a soaked cloth and wiped the ebony so that there were no dry spots on either sides or ...

Re: How wet should ebony binding be for hot-pipe bending?
Thanks again, Well having spent the last day and a half working on this, it's slow but going OK. I've only wasted an inch or two of wood and all the binding is pretty much done. I started with the larger bends and worked my way towards the trickier pieces, having just bent this, which fit in so tigh...

Re: How wet should ebony binding be for hot-pipe bending?
Thanks, That fiber product looks like a good back up plan should I have no success with the wood. The ebony arrived today so i'm part way through bending my first piece. I'm going very slowly but it is starting to bend. I've only got a subtle curve on it at the moment, almost enough for the main low...

Re: How wet should ebony binding be for hot-pipe bending?
Thanks for all the replies so far, It sounds like it might be a bit of a steep learning curve, but I'll take it steady and see how I do. As a back up plan, I know this is totally cheating, but has anyone tried something like this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290935647784?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_...

How wet should ebony binding be for hot-pipe bending?
I have some ebony strips to use as binding. 2mm thick, 6mm wide. This will be my first attempt at bending any wood, and being a budget DIY project I will be setting up a basic hot-pipe jig. It seems that for general woodworking, soaking wood overnight before bending is the norm. However, I've heard ...

Where to buy quality solid-body blanks in UK?
As the title suggests, I'm in the UK and am looking to buy a couple of quality solid body blanks for electric guitar projects. I'm looking for 1-piece blanks, pre-dried. (specifically, 1 ash, and 1 mahogony/sapele). If the supplier can provide the specific moisture content all the better. Can anyone...
