Re: My first build the slow progression
I have my Mdf pattern yet that would work if I can hold it still (probably by the holes for the bridge. Now I just need to find someone local with a big belt or drum sander to send it through. I don't think I want to try my planer. I appreciate the advice and encouragement.

Re: My first build the slow progression
Scale length is 24-3/4 the holes are already drilled to mount the studs for the bridge. I don't know the exact neck angle but it is somewhere between 2-5 deg, I don't really trust that I cut it to exactly 3. The biggest problem if I thin the top is coming up with a stable way to cut the neck pocket ...

Re: My first build the slow progression
Yea this has definitely been a major learning experience. The pickups don't bother me, I had always planned on making custom pickup rings. The recessed section for the controls on the other hand was a reaction to the problem that the knobs looked extremely out of place sitting at different heights g...

Back at it again. Got the rough shaping done last night. Turned out quite well despite my fears.

Re: My first build the slow progression
Robert, after checking it out I dig the jig. My biggest concern was free handing the steps as my router and I tend not to get along, but that jig looks like it should hold it steady. Ill have to build one this weekend.

Re: What tools do you use when contouring your guitar body?
I messed around with my angle grinder and one of the sand paper flap discs and If I decide to use it I will need to work on my finesse a bit. I tended to leave some gouges that will take a lot of sanding to get out. However I used a rasp that I found and got this far. Still needs a little finishing ...

Re: My first build the slow progression
Need to finish smoothing up the edges a bit on the drum sander and then with a sanding block to keep the curve nice and smooth then she's ready to carve that quilted top. I'm scared of that part... Should I be?

Re: My first build the slow progression
I zipped the body and maple top out using a pattern bit in my router. Snapped one off in the process but they were cheap so I just bought another one. I drilled out the electronics cavity and a weight reduction pocket. Originally I was going for a les Paul look but it morphed more toward a prs.

My first build the slow progression
A few notes before I start posting pictures. 1. I don't know how to play guitar, hopefully this will be inspiration to learn. 2. My working skill consist of building cabinets and coffee tables. 3. I'm pretty much making this up as I go so suggestions are more than welcome.

What tools do you use when contouring your guitar body?
More of a woodworking question really, but how do you guys get the really wide chamfer that I see on some of your guitars? And for the varying chamfers? I'm getting read to start carving my guitar and then finishing the edge and I think I like the idea of a varying chamfer for the back, but I don't ...

Re: Methods for cutting out body shape
My thought process is that i can zip a pattern out of plywood in 5 minutes using a rotozip bit and if I screw up I have plenty of plywood to use. Ill probably still do that just for the finishing cut, But if you're suggesting 1/8" deep is all the router can handle that's 15 times around the loo...

Re: Methods for cutting out body shape
I haven't had much experience using a router so this may be a stupid question but why can't you just take multiple shallow cuts following the pattern and skip trimming off the excess all together?

Re: Methods for cutting out body shape
That seems to me like the most viable option. I take it you suggest using thicker pattern material so you can adjust for your shallower cut?

Methods for cutting out body shape
I'm curious what methods you guys use for cutting out your body shapes. Bandsaw, jigsaw, router, others? I think I might try making a pattern out of 1/4" plywood and routing the shape out since I don't have access to a bandsaw.

Re: white finish on flamed maple
As the maple darkens over time the figure will pop though the white more an more. My friend has a Taylor solid body with I semi translucent white finish over flame maple and it looks pretty sweet. Try checking out mixol white pigment. I've never used it but they same that its not completely opaque w...
