Well when I originally messaged back and forth with the seller on ebay, he said that he'd make me a new rosewood rim. Now, I'm starting to feel guilty though, and will likely message him back and tell him that I'm just going to put it in a D mold and try it....
Thanks for everyone's valuable info!

Re: martin gurus, what is this???
I sent the seller a pic of the dread top he included with the kit on top of the rim... He was very apologetic. He said he thinks this may be a grand auditorium rim, but I'm not at all familiar with Martin sizes. The good side is that he offered to build a new rim for me to fit the dread parts that c...

martin gurus, what is this???
Trolling ebay I found an assembled dread. rim that the seller matched up with other misc. martin parts to sell as a kit. For $300 it seemed like a good deal. Got everything in today....and the rim is NOT a dread! I'm messaging back and forth with the seller and it seems they'll make it right, but co...

3 or 4 piece backs
With all the problems (and prices) luthiers are confronting with the standard two piece backs, what advantages/disadvantages would a 3 or 4 piece back have? I've played and read much about Martin's D-35 three piece, and I would think that most people think that the D-35 is a great success. So why do...

Re: dis-assembling an acoustic ?
I take it that you are not trying to save the finish as well, and that is good too because you can use heat on the body without worrying about that. Use a clothes iron on the neck and the end blocks, if you heat them well with the iron they'll come off pretty easy. No, I wasn't particularly fond of...

Re: dis-assembling an acoustic ?
good idea Randy! I think I'm going to try the Mark S. approach and try to coax this baby apart. Like I had mentioned, the water had already started the process for me. The bindings are almost all off, so that will save some time. Thanks for all the tips! I'll post some pics in progress... if it goes...

Re: dis-assembling an acoustic ?
Thanks Mark S., Yes, the binding has already separated from the top, so it would appear to be a good sign. I don't really care about the top so much, it's just a spruce. But I would like to salvage the back and sides, since they are Brazilian. I'm pretty sure it was assembled with either normal whit...

dis-assembling an acoustic ?
I have a Brazilian rosewood dreadnaught that was built for me by a friend close to 10 years ago as a favor. While the guitar was on loan to a buddy- I loaned it to him to"play it in", it was saturated with water - his house was demolished by hurricane Katrina. The guitar was in such bad sh...

Re: local wood acoustic
Thanks G.S., That slimline tele looks very nice. I appreciate the input about cypress. I know the "normal" school of thought is if you can buy traditional proven lumber at a reasonable price, why consider anything else..... I'm just stubborn I guess; we have so many great local woods down ...

local wood acoustic
Hi all, It's been a really long time since I've visited for health reasons, but I'm back and kicking again. I've been wanting to switch to making guitars from totally locally harvested woods, instead of the normal foreign exotics. With electrics that I build it isn't a problem; we have a huge select...
