Jon Gomm, Andy McKee, Preston Reed and Newton Faulkner at the moment - along with some Beautiful South/Housemartins and The English Beat (as you guys would know them - over here they're just The Beat). I was "rudeboy" when i was a kid in 70's and I loved The Beat. I remember saving up and...

Spalted Tonewood?
I love spalted wood and the idea occured to me of using spalted wood for the back and sides of an acoustic guitar. So I did a web search for spalted tonewood and came across this website: http://tonewood.rs/?cat=21 . There is some beautifully spalted wood on there. I'm wondering if there would be an...

Re: First Build - Building from a kit vs building from Scratch?
Thanks everyone for your help. I think I will start with a kit and while I'm doing that, practice some of the "from scratch" skills/processes on scrap material as suggested by Adam. Ah well, the baritone will have to wait. Now the only question is what kit?

Re: First Build - Building from a kit vs building from Scratch?
All good comments above. Since I was one of the people who suggested considering a kit, I'll add my two cents... Thanks, once again, Freeman for your detailed response. Nice guitars! I love the mahogany resonator. Looks beautiful. Whenever I see these wonderful creations I always wish I could hear ...

Re: First Build - Building from a kit vs building from Scratch?
Thanks for your advice and insight Tim. Aside from all the guitar stuff I've also learned a new word, "quixotic"! That's a nice looking guitar in the photo (nice dog to). Is that one of your "from scratch" guitars or from a kit?Tim Allen wrote:I would also recommend building a kit first...

Re: First Build - Building from a kit vs building from Scratch?
Interesting points re:kits. I wonder, Ciaran, if it might help to know exactly what woodworking kit/experience you either have, or have easy access to? I have no woodworking experience as such. I know it's not the same thing, but I have done quite a bit of carpentry and am pretty good at it. I have...

First Build - Building from a kit vs building from Scratch?
I have put up a number of posts now asking questions arising out of my intention to build a baritone acoustic from scratch as my first ever build. A number of people have advised me to build an standard acoustic from a kit first. It seems to me that, with kits, so much of the work is already done an...

Re: Plans for a Baritone Acoustic: Anyone know where I'd get them?
There are a multitude of skills involved in guitar building. You don't have to learn them all on the first build. You can learn a lot by building a kit. And don't think you will build the ultimate guitar on the first try, and don't even think you can stop at one! Hi Jamie, Are you the same Jamie I ...

Re: Plans for a Baritone Acoustic: Anyone know where I'd get them?
Thanks Freeman for all the info. You've been very helpful. I'll take a look at it all in detail tonight. I had already come across the Baritone Acoustic kit you included a link to. The idea of easing myself in to building guitars by starting with a kit does have it's appeal but I wonder what value b...

Plans for a Baritone Acoustic: Anyone know where I'd get them?
I've been scearching the internet looking for plans for a baritone acoustic guitar and the only set I can find is on www.cadguitarplans.com. These plans are for a standard body guitar and I would prefer to build a cutaway bodied guitar. They also seem a bit on the expensive side when compared to (no...

Thicknessing? ( Excuse my ignorance)
Hello All, I've been on some of the of tonewood suppliers' websites doing some research and I've noticed that most of them offer a "thicknessing" service. I figure the word is pretty self explanatory and I am aware that there are thicknessing machines you can buy which will remove unwanted...

Re: Novice: How To Go About Designing A Baritine Acoustic For First Ever Build
Personally, I think the amount you have to learn, just to build ANY guitar, makes it inadvisable to combine that with designing a guitar. You don't even know what things you do well yet and what you need to improve to get the quality you want. If it was me, I would build at least one guitar followi...

Re: Novice: How To Go About Designing A Baritine Acoustic For First Ever Build
About two years ago there was a discussion here about baritones, and I decided I would build one. I used a plan set for a dreadnought, I used the 27" scale length Taylor used for his GT8 baritone, and added 1/8 " of hight to the braces. It has become one of my favorite guitars, and both m...
