Re: Epiphone Casino neck reset

Okay, I answered my own question. I don't need to go through the fret board to steam the neck apart. See pics. I am amazed that Epiphone sets a neck with so much slop. There is a 1 mm gap on both sides of the neck block. No wonder the the neck started to come apart for the previous owner.

Epiphone Casino neck reset

I just bought an Epiphone Casino that had a horrible neck re-glue job. Is the neck/body joint a standard tenon or dovetail? Will the 17th fret give me good access to steam it apart?

Re: Did I ruin my stored pickups?

What would the procedure be for recharging the individual poles using a rare earth magnet? Do I have to take the pickup apart?

Did I ruin my stored pickups?

I just started looking at building pickups. When I did a little digging about Alnico Magnets, it appears you can demagnetize or change their magnetic strength if you put them next to another magnetic field. I have a few sets of pickups that I put into zip-lock bags and threw them into the same drawe...

Re: Mandolin Top design keeps cracking; repost

Fortunately the top is holding up and there is no sign of cracking. The tail piece also has no problems. I did shorten it a bit, as it was almost touching the top. I think I finally can move on to my next project without worry.

Re: Potentiometer...Wrong way around

I did not mean to refer to your post. In that I am sorry. I have seen audio taper used for tone controls and linear taper used for audio.

Re: Potentiometer...Wrong way around

The lettering for pots; A, B or C, F are for either linear taper or logarithmic taper. Check the manufacturer to see what they use as a key code. Logarithmic taper is normally used for volume as that is the way our hearing works. linear taper would be used when you want a linear adjustment of a sign...

Re: Mandolin Top design keeps cracking; repost

Michael, you are right. I will plan better on my next mandolin. The first top was shallower and I had a higher bridge. I wanted a higher crown on this last top to make it structurally stronger. Only after carving the top did I realize I over did it, but decided to stay with it.

Re: Mandolin Top design keeps cracking; repost

The average height would be 11mm, top to strings on bridge. The break angle is 17 degrees.

Re: Wiring Help PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The B500k pots are linear taper and the A500k are audio taper. Audio taper pots are normally used for volume controls and the linear taper are for the tone controls. Audio taper compensates to the logarithmic way the ear/brain hears.

Re: Mandolin Top design keeps cracking; repost

The concept design of the mandolin was my daughter's. She wanted a mandolin that was comfortable when used without a strap. I made the tail piece to fit the shape of the mandolin. This one is a second revision. I had to put a bar for the strings to go under to help keep the strings from pulling the ...

Re: Mandolin Top design keeps cracking; repost

Here is my third top made of Adirondack spruce. I got rid of the top mounted pickup and cutout needed for it. I will work on installing piezo pickups from the inside later since I already have a hole in the side for a jack. I just finished the bridge and gave it to back to my daughter. She likes the...

Re: Mandolin Top design keeps cracking; repost

Mario,
With the single sound hole, do mean off on the side or in the center? If in the center than I am assuming I need to use an X brace.

What specifically is a stress-riser? This is the first time I heard the term used.

Re: Mandolin Top design keeps cracking; repost

The two blocks for the pickup are not touching the top sound board. They are attached only to the face of the neck heel and are floating away from the top. Either way, the pickup hole will not be in my next top and I will not have the pickup blocks. The piezo pickups are a good alternative. Michael,...

Mandolin Top design keeps cracking; repost

I hope I'm not breaking any rules by reposting. I accidently posted in the bowed instruments forum and I wasn't able to edit it. I have never built a mandolin. All my work is with guitars. My daughter sketched up a design of a mandolin that she felt would be easier to hold on her lap. She also wante...
