Re: Tone Wood for Electric Guitars
I'm fairly surprised that he made a 50 minute introductory video on the effects of different woods on tone and never defined tone. That said, I enjoyed his video and it makes sense if the only thing that pickups pick up is waves from the strings. Is that true? I have no clue. The different sound cli...

Re: I finally did it, my first instrument from scratch
Nice video. That's a great smile on his face at the end of the song.

Re: Quintar by Hans Bezemer
Sigh. Slowly. Plans are drawn and wood is seasoning and my health has been such that I haven't gotten anywhere else. Given the health issues, I did go ahead and purchase a power planer about a week ago so I can eliminate some of the grunt work. I like hand tools but planing faces level is a lot of w...

Re: Quintar by Hans Bezemer
Oh, I see. When I drew the fretboard, I made 23.5" the length of the B string at the position where the string lies on the nut and bridge, not where the nut meets the end of the fretboard. Same for the rest of the frets. So maybe I'll need more room for compensation.

Re: Quintar by Hans Bezemer
Does this make sense? Not completely, unless you are talking about compensation issues. But that's a pretty small amount, anyway, and I'm giving it an extra 1/4" over what I already know works. I can see where it's pretty much impossible to get the two points endpoints (nut and bridge) exact b...

Re: Quintar by Hans Bezemer
Ah, that makes more sense, thanks. I drew up my fretboard last night with a 3" fan and 22 frets. I think I would like to try that first to see how it fits my hand. When I talked to the custom string makers, they seemed to think that 23 3/4" was pretty much the upper limit for a standard st...

Re: Quintar by Hans Bezemer
I had a hard time trying to get the b string up to tune. A lot of strings broke or the ball turned loose. When up to pitch I did not dare to bend it a little more then to get some vibrato. You do have to take it up slowly and give the steel a little time to relax before you push it more. I broke a ...

Re: Quintar by Hans Bezemer
Well, I was planning on a 6 string starting on the C below the guitar's E and heading up to a high B. That essentially covers the entire range of the mandolin family--from a mandocello on the lowest four strings all the way to a mandolin on the highest four starting at the 5th fret--so that tuning h...

Re: slicing up 2" thk flame maple
Resawing can be done by hand with a rip saw, but I don't envy you trying to do that much maple. But here's a video:

Re: Quintar by Hans Bezemer
How is this going, Hans? I came to the guitar from mandolin and fifths make much more sense to me. I usually wind up trying to get all my guitars tuned into fifths eventually. I'm in the planning phase for a multi-scale electric quintar now, though no where near as elaborate as what you are doing. S...

Re: Identification help... Old archtop
I have an old L-50 that has an arched back and top and back seem to be carved. I did a search on that and came across a post from somewhere that said that Gibson sometimes ran out of the cheaper tops and backs and would just throw what they had around onto the guitars in order to keep up with demand...

Re: Bracing a MandoCello
Just so you know, I started out playing mandolin and tend to tune all my instruments in fifths. I have an old Gibson archtop (24.75" scale length) tuned to C-G-D-A-E-E. That low C is awfully quiet at that scale length. It's there, but I wish it were more powerful. I'm gearing up to try an archt...
