Re: Gluing Inlay

Greg is right. Use epoxy exactly as he describes. I have glued in several inlays into rosewood and this method comes out with the best look. Of course cut the inlay as tight as possible so the gaps are small.

Re: Guitar kit recommendations

Thanks for the reply. Do I need a sanding block with a radius to check the fret level and send? About the finish, I'd like the neck to be satin, any suggestions on what to use and how to proceed? I read somewhere that I can apply finish by hand (for neck and/or body), not necessarily using spray eq...

Stew Mac Repair Vise?

Does anyone out there own a Stew Mac repair vise? Are they worth the cost? I have been thinking about buying one for quite a while. I currently use a modified vise for some of my work but it looks like the repair vise might be more versatile. I just want some opinions from owners before I plunk out ...

Look into Tru Oil. Easy to work with and finishes to a high gloss or satin finish depending on how you work it.

Re: about slotting nuts with string scraps and pumice

Awesome! Great tutorial Bob. I use strings glued to a Popsicle stick right now to finesse a slot. This is a whole new level of string usage.

Re: Vintage Amber recipes?

Or as per Frank Ford. Set a glass jar of lacquer in a sunny spot for a period (mine was there for a few months) until the color is something you might be looking for. I believe he uses it more for repair touch-ups. I have used it for a uke previously. Gives that aged look right away. Interesting. I...

Re: Tru Oil Maple Neck Vintage Amber

I have very limited finishing experience, so please excuse my ignorance, I have heard that maple does not take stain easily, and it can be blotch. Is this also the case with eventually darkening with the oil finish? Also will tinting the oil with a dye make it easier to get an even finish, or will ...

Re: Vintage Amber recipes?

I usually go with Stew Mac Vintage Amber Tint and add a few drops Tobacco brown to take out some of the yellow in the Vintage Amber.

Re: Too much treble in pickup

The mod shown in that Trade Secrets video will not only affect the tone, but also the taper of the pot. It will actually make a linear taper pot approximate an audio taper, but doesn't skew an audio taper pot so much as to be unusable usually, although it might behave a little strangely. Really, it...

Re: Sunburst finishes

Mike,

Before you paint buy this book and read it cover to cover. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Books,_plan ... -Step.html

Then search the MIMF library. There is a lot of great information on here that has been cover in depth.

Re: Electric Guitar Bridges - Which is best?

I really like the Callaham bridges on my Strat's. Mainly because they are machined steel. I notice quite a difference in tone and sustain when I install these. Worth checking out.

Re: Wet sanding and wood swell

Darren, I had exactly the same thing a few months ago...not sure the post is still active. Basswood body with black nitrocellulose and several coats of clear. I let it dry for a week before sanding any further. Like you say, I've never had problems when sanding other woods and I think basswood must...

Went out this morning and the finish is almost back to normal. Looks near perfect. A true lesson in patience. Glad I didn't give in to my "do something" urge and waited.

Re: Wet sanding and wood swell

Went out to the shop and checked on it. Looks like it is already going down. I'm going to give it a week and see what happens before I mess with it. Thanks fro the tips.
