We’ll see. I also used it to set the neck on my Lester. Will be sure to report any issues that arise!

Re: Getting back to it - Questions re...a fretless bass??

I don't think anything is different except, of course, the strings get lowered by the height of the frets. Also, you can set the action pretty low because fret buzz is no longer a concern. Are you going to use flat wound strings? Sorry to be so late getting back to this. Missed it when first posted...

Re: Almost consistently bad glue joints...

On the other hand, I've seen reports on line of failures in fish glue joints under prolonged high humidity and warm temperatures. That mirrors the sorts of problems I had with liquid hide glue in the past, which lead to my dropping the use of that. Hopefully that won't be an issue for me. SE Michig...

Re: Getting back to it - Questions re...a fretless bass??

Still haven't started this project, but I have a set of MIMF plans and an ebony fingerboard. I also have some body blanks in the shop Still trying to decide whether to do a 4- or 5-string, but since I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on the bridge, it's decision time. Any special considerations f...

Re: Getting back to it - Questions re...a fretless bass??

Thanks. I'm not certain of my abilities enough to go without some kind of "training wheels" to get the intonation right. :D Maybe some half- or quarter-"fret-fillers" that extend to the upper FB edge which would be both decorative and functional. Not sure if I'll bind the neck ed...

Getting back to it - Questions re...a fretless bass??

Hey all... It's been a while since I was on here. I've been spending an inordinate amount of time making music instead of instruments. Amazing to discover what my capabilities are now that I'm retired and have the time to practice! Plus I started playing drums almost three years ago, then acquired t...

Re: finishing a electric guitar

Steve, what filler, sealer, top coat did you use on the mahogany guitar? The grain on the back is amazing. Thank you. Just logged in here for the first time in a long time and realized this hadn't been answered. If you're still "listening," Mike, it was a very simple schedule. Three coats...

Re: finishing a electric guitar

I'm also going to endorse Brite Tone. I've finished three guitars. One in nitro, one in Tru-Oil, and one in Brite Tone. Brite Tone wins hands-down. One of the amazing things about it is the ability to lay down many many coats before leveling. I didn't touch the finish on this until I had 10 coats, a...

Re: Ready for a new challenge

Interesting suggestions.

Something I saw on Saturday looked interesting. Tony Levin (with King Crimson) was playing a solid-body electric upright bass. A quick web search turned up very little info on building one though.

Thanks, Matthew. I'd like to take a look at that.

I'm not familiar with Clay's travel guitar.

Re: Ready for a new challenge

That said, build yourself a baritone? A baritone guitar? I dunno. I already have a Squier bass VI, and built a 4-string short-scale last year (now my go-to bass). If I were to tackle another guitar it’d probably be a 5-string bass or a fretless bass. And once my Stick arrives I’ll have the low-end ...

All very cool stuff. But I’m really looking to make something I can PLAY!! :D And no, programming doesn’t qualify as “playing”!  I did enough programming for a living, and it definitely qualifies as WORK! :)

Re: Ready for a new challenge

Good point, Barry. If I were to build really nice acoustic guitar it might inspire me to do more with it. A hurdy gurdy is one thing I've thought of. Very cool instrument, and seems pretty accessible for the novice. Another is a hammered dulcimer. I've always loved the sound of the hammered dulcimer...

Ready for a new challenge

Hey all - haven't been around much in the last year. I've been spending more time learning music than building instruments. I started taking drum lessons about 18 months ago, have been studying a lot of theory, playing the new short-scale bass I finished during the early Covid lock-down, attended a ...

I worked with someone whose husband had a high-end cabinet shop that made extensive use of exotic species. I tried to make arrangements to dig through their scrap bin, but without success!

Re: finishing a electric guitar

Keep in mind that a satin neck will not stay satin. Constant handling will polish it to a high gloss over time. I have a 30-year old Strat that started out satin, but you’d never guess that now! :)
