Re: Deft lacquer question
I know Deft is a brand, I was just stating that I was using deft brand because different brands seem to work very differently than others. I might have to look into oil varnish. I used tru oil on my last build and that was extremely easy to apply and hardened quickly. I avoided it this time around b...

Re: Deft lacquer question
As a college student I dont really have the funds or room for spray equipment but one day I could see it being worth the investment, especially if guitar building becomes a more frequent pastime. If the Deft turns disastrous Ill just sand it down and use something else I suppose. Its still pretty th...

Re: Deft lacquer question
Ive heard some similar stories with deft but for me at least its been hard to find a spray lacquer that hardens like the stuff sprayed out of a gun. Im really not in the market to go out and get a bunch of spray equipment so Ive sort of accepted the fact that maybe the finish wont be a professional ...

Deft lacquer question
I finally decided to go with Deft (nitro?) lacquer spray to finish my guitar. I believe its nitro at least because the other deft wood finish spray lacquer cans said acrylic on the front. Anyway... I finished off a whole can and am going to need another to build up a smooth finish. After getting som...

Re: Question about Laminate Neck wood
Thanks for all the replies. Sweet amp, Mark! I really like the sound of the fender bassman. I'll have to draw a neck out in CAD to get this project moving forward now.

Question about Laminate Neck wood
I'm currently in the planning stages of my second build. I am looking at making a laminate striped neck using a mixture of maple and mahogany or walnut. Is using 1/16" thick hardwood for the mahogany/walnut from a scale lumber place like Midwest Products feasible or do I need to look for wood e...

Refinished Greg Bennett
I just finished putting back together my Greg Bennett Malibu after refinishing it. I have been neglecting this guitar for a few years and have barely played it since getting newer guitars in that time frame. Since it was just a budget beginner guitar I thought I would try my hand at giving it a new ...

Anyone have experience with Krylon Finishes?
Im working on refinishing a guitar and have spent more time than Id care to admit researching whether Krylon spray will create awful finishes or not. Ive heard about plenty of horror stories of people having finishes that never fully dry or finishes that crack and wrinkle. Ive also seen some great s...

Re: Thinking of starting another project
Thanks everyone. Well it looks like I will be getting some new electronics in the next couple weeks or so. I'll be sure to put the process up on this forum.

Thinking of starting another project
I finished my first guitar build a little over 6 months ago and a furniture project about a month ago and I'm really itching to get started on another project. As a student with a limited budget, I don't want to spend a lot, so I was thinking of a bit of a toned back project. I have a metallic red G...

Question about Pickups
Im trying to finish my tele build. This is the first guitar I have built so I dont want any crazy expensive hardware. I have been looking at a Seymour Duncan STR1 Vintage tele rythm pickup for the neck pup. For the bridge I have been a little lost. Does anyone have experience with the Duncan and wha...

Re: Finished my first build
No real significance to the inlay I suppose. I wanted to put something on the headstock but didn't really want to mess around with decals. I happened to have some rosewood strips so I just made a criss-cross shape for interest and contrast to the maple.

Finished my first build
So here is my Telecaster build, built slowly over the course of a semester. Alder body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard. The only thing I need to still get is some pickups but I'm not entirely sure what I getting for those yet. I was recommended towards Lindy Fralin and Bob Lollar pickups but Ive bee...

Re: Trying to build a first guitar
My only worry is that the neck is a tad thinner than 1/2 in, .47 in to be exact. It is a very small amount, but will this cause the neck to snap with all of the string tension?
My solution would be to simply shape some more maple onto the back of the neck.

Re: Trying to build a first guitar
At this point in the game I have the neck almost completely done. The tru oil finish is going to be curing for the next few days and then I can polish it and install the tuners and string trees. I've bought parts from all over but noting has come from China. The quality just isn't there and I would ...

Adding a logo/insignia to a head
I'm just about finished with the neck I've been building and I was wondering what ways people apply logos/insignia to the custom builds.
I know that using adhesive transparency paper is a common method but are there any other ways? Some sort of pen? Paint? Etc
Thanks

Re: Trying to build a first guitar
Thanks for all of the comments! IN saying that I want a project to fill my free time. I am am not suggesting that I will spent hours a day building this thing because I have nothing else to do. I am working on architecture 7 days a week, as you probably are familiar with Steve. I just want this to b...
