Re: An SG Mandolin!

This was actually one of a pair of twins. The other one sees regular duty in the hands of Patrick McAlister, multi-instrumentalist for the band I'm in (RJV and Hell County Revival *shameless self-promotion*).

An SG Mandolin!

Here's my most recent build. Solidbody neck-through mandolin. The neck is walnut, mahogany, and birdseye maple. Mahogany wings. Spalted maple top (boy, that stuff is fun to work with  ) Nobody made the pickup I wanted, so that's how I got into pickup winding. Made my own winder and fabricated ...

Re: My latest build

Sorry for the delay in response. I'm not getting much done lately! In answer to your questions: Peter - the Earthwood strings did fix the problem. Their ball ends are significantly smaller. The relief cuts weren't too hard, they are pieces of white oak contoured to the side profile. I then glued bla...

Re: Upright basses and Hide Glue

Having read the Ham article, I tried the steam method on my last build, and found a few issues. The first time, the steam didn't penetrate fully enough, and the glue only reactivated along the very edge. The top quickly separated, so I removed it, cleaned off the glue, and tried again. The second ti...

Upright basses and Hide Glue

So in construction of a few large-body acoustic bass guitars, I have run into the normal hide glue problem: lack of working time when gluing the top and back to the sides. A fellow builder asked me, "Well, how do they do it on upright basses and cellos?" And I have no idea. Would someone m...

Re: Sapele cracks

They only showed up after finishing.
They have not required filling, so they do not appear to be voids.

Sapele cracks

My most recent builds have laminated necks containing sapele. After completion, I have discovered these discolorations in the wood - see attached. The heel of one neck is on the top, and the headstock of the second is on the bottom. Both necks were cut from the same blank. The marks have not require...

Re: Wiring issue

Good deal. Thanks so much for the information.

The owner describes position 3 as sounding like "a bag of smashed ***holes", so we're going to be rewiring it for a more traditional 3-position configuration without the high-pass filter.

Wiring issue

Hey folks. I'm working on an old Airline guitar and the wiring has me flummoxed. It's a 2-pickup configuration with separate volume/tone controls for each pickup; output from these then goes to a 3-way 9-pole switch; then to a master volume; then to output. Each pickup has only a hot and lead output...

My latest build

Here's one I've been troubleshooting for the last 2 1/2 years. It's a clone of an Ernie Ball Earthwood bass. 6" body depth. 34" body scale. Lots of cosmetic issues with it that are consequences of correcting design flaws, but I can live with those.

Re: Bigsby acting as an antenna?

Sorry for the delayed reply - got tied up in other projects. David - phase checks out. No change in noise when strings are touched. I'll try the foil trick. Joshua - I'll try your troubleshooting method after that. I get ground continuity from tailpiece to bridge to tuners, so that seems to be in w...

http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/WD2HH3T22_00/Guitar-Wiring-Diagam-w-2-Humbuckers3-Way-Toggle-Switch2-Volumes2-Tones.html This is the wiring diagram that most closely corresponds to this guitar's. The only exception is that the lugs on the tone pots are reversed, i.e. the cap is wired to the...

Bigsby acting as an antenna?

Hey folks. I've got a Gibson custom SG with an aftermarket Bigsby that's having a 60-cycle hum which gets worse depending on where you're pointing the guitar. The problem is reproducible on multiple amps in different physical locations, so I don't think it's a power supply problem. The guitar is NOT...

Re: A fundamental design flaw...

Well, I ordered a variety of string sets. It turns out that the actual Earthwood strings are made with a smaller ball end that will work without additional effort. So problem solved, unless the buyer wants to use different strings...

Re: A fundamental design flaw...

The string/thread idea is a sound workaround for prototype testing but not for production. I am considering getting lathe-savvy and turning my own pins, but for now I've got a few ideas and suggestions, including filing four corners in each string hole while still maintaining an overall round profil...

Re: A fundamental design flaw...

Well, I tried loading through the sound hole - no dice. The bridge is too far back and my arms aren't skinny enough (and I'm a fairly skinny dude). This is just a prototype, so increasing the sound hole size is actually on the plans for the next one, but I think I'm going to try Peter's #1 solution....
