I don't think you'll need a block of wood to keep the wand from mashing together near the handle but by all means give it a try - a little security never hurts. I'm probably a little late with my comments but... I bent mine cold and got it to fit in a 2.5" pipe. I went slow and pulled it out of the vice a few times when I thought it might crack but no problems. I finally got the tip narrow enough to fit in the pipe and then pushed it in from there.
