Re: sanding sealer
Alan, Do I detect a bit of sarcasm?? I hope not. The only reason I use the term industrial sanding sealer is because that is the name of the product in the catalog and on the can. Even though you say you " don't work on an 'industrial' scale" I'm sure you use many industrial products and p...

Re: sanding sealer
Sorry Alan, but you're wrong on this topic. Your posts are usually well informed, well thought, and well spoken. I'm assuming that you are just not familiar with the product. The idea that a "thinned out final finish works as well" as an industrial *sanding* sealer for the same application...

Re: CNC for inlay work
Wow!! Not much interest in this sub-forum. Any 3-axis CNC machine will have the capacity to do inlay work or carving within dimensional requirements. Guitars are pretty small products in the CNC world. There are several options for machines that are much smaller than the typical cabinet shop size CN...

sanding sealer
Please Help!!! Mohawk has discontinued their Industrial Sanding Sealer (M610-1607) which I have been using for many decades. They have no recommended replacement for it other than their Vinyl Sealer which I use for other applications, but I really don't like it under guitar finishes. Their Industria...

gluing pickguards
Hi guys. I've been away for a while. Has anyone here ever tried gluing real celluloid pickguards on a top the way Gibson used to do it?? They would glue the pickguard down to the top with acetone after several coats of lacquer (on top of a sunburst or clear) and then continue with several more coats...

Sorry. I posted the first thread before I realized there was a 'Glues and Finishes" section.
I have used Sherwin Williams conversion varnish for about 30 years.

Re: touching up poly finishes
If it is poly then nothing will stick to it without scuffing it....not even poly.

conversion varnish
Has anyone used conversion varnish for finishing acoustic guitars? I've used it for many years with good results on solid body electrics. I'm wondering about acoustic properties compared to polyurethane, nitro, shellac. Thanks

Re: Aqua Coat grain filler
Thanks Steven. I did talk to them and they thought I might have problems getting it to tint dark enough. That's why I was hoping to get some experienced users here. I ordered some so I'll be experimenting.
Have you used it under french polish on rosewood??

perfect rib seam at tailblock
I've never paid too much attention to perfect rib seams at the tail/bottom of my acoustics because I have always inlaid binding/purfling at that seam. I have a customer who wants me to build a Gibson J45 'clone' and wants the seam at the bottom to be just like Gibson (or Martin, for that matter).......
