Re: Low Impedance pickup - prototype
thanks , have you put any thought into Pots for a circuit, i've been trying to do research on it but not getting much of anywhere. I'm finding conflicting answers about whether standard pots and caps will be okay (the bass harp doesn't seem to be effected by the strat volume and blend control).

Re: Low Impedance pickup - prototype
i went with available, but from what i've read the type of magnet doesn't have a huge effect ( counter intuitively) i've been considering doing a double coil to get some high cancellation, possibly with a push button switch to make it switchable from double to single coil. the bass has good response...

Re: Low Impedance pickup - prototype
I've been working with this concept as well, ( i think we have the same transformer type). i'm planning on experiment with wiring pairs of them to get the top range cancellation that happens with Humbuckers. and having a mini switch to kill one coil for a more S-ish sound

Re: Bowed suggestions for a Viola Da Gamba-ish
that's an amazing idea, this is a bread board instrument and has provided a lot of good info for me, i will suggest trying to figure out away to make the pin adjustable, i may be returning the peg to have it sit just right as i learn more about the instrument

Re: Bowed suggestions for a Viola Da Gamba-ish
more a side movement, the cello bow gives a faster attack and louder sound, a bit more throaty if that's a good word for it ? the violin bow has better dynamics, and sounds a bit more from the upper mids. i'm glad i have both. now to build one out of legitimate tone woods ( i have some lovely Sapele...

Re: Bowed suggestions for a Viola Da Gamba-ish
So i turned a longer peg, went to a more upright playing style, and moved the soundpost a hair further from the treble foot of the bridge and toward the bass side of the instrument with a HUGE reslut. the new Peg (about 20" of black locust) helps me anchor the instrument for a much easier vibra...

Re: Bowed suggestions for a Viola Da Gamba-ish
I eventually did go to the 1/2 size cello bow, and playing position has migrated to about 2/3 of the way to a cello position, i'm going to turn a friction fit extension for the end pin to allow it to hit the floor, but i have some other versions on deck... specifically a minimalist version in bass (...

Re: Bowed suggestions for a Viola Da Gamba-ish
i would be lying if i said i didn't get some of the ideas from his instruments, but it's a build i've been working towards for a very long time, it's actually far more viol than guitar (bass bar, sound post) with a touch of banjo thrown in. (the end pin actually goes all the way through the body int...

Bowed suggestions for a Viola Da Gamba-ish
i've been prototyping a new instrument that is in effect either a modernized viola da gamba, or a funky shaped arpeggione and i am at the point where it's strung up and actually has some hopes of sounding good ( i will be building a second with better wood and finish next year). it's a 28.5" sc...

Re: Baritone 12 string
so a set of Bajo Sexto strings cam in and i gave them a shot on my standard 12 string, and at tension for the G it sounded great, so far the bridge has stayed put pretty well so, i'm going to move forward with Beate's suggestion of a 25.5 scale just to reduce leverage... also cuts down on the wood i...

Re: Guitar Synth, Ergonomic Shape, Baritone tuning
niiiice, love the ergo body, fantastic sense of line and curve it looks very clean in form if that makes any sense. as a bari- and synth player it's close to my heart.

Re: Baritone 12 string
from what i've found string tension at a .092 is about the same as what i play on my guitars, i'm avoiding glued bridges and going with a tailpiece to solve one aspect of that, doing inserts is a really good idea and i can fabricate those if i absolutely have to. i'm hoping 6 bolts like you have on ...

Re: Baritone 12 string
One last thought and I'll shut up and let you build this thing. I happened to be in my local music store and knowing that they served the Mariachi bands in our Hispanic community I asked if they had a bajo sexto that I could look at. They said they didn't have one in stock but they had two bajo qui...

Re: Baritone 12 string
Why is a standard 12 string neck not an option? The standard scale of a Bass VI has a 30" scale. Its 3rd fret corresponds to the scale of a standard guitar. And that would mean a tuning of G-G... (or A-A or B-B in order to avoid the hassle with the too small tension .084" low string of th...

Re: Baritone 12 string
currently looking at 16 frets clear for that very reason, thanks for the tip, neck angle and stability of the neck is my biggest fear about this project, and the 28.5 scale is a lot of lever so the plan is not to be shy about how it attaches ( considering using 6 bolts) i don't play up the neck much...

Re: Baritone 12 string
Sorry for the confusion, it will in all but the most broad definition be an electric, about 1 3/4 deep, routed chambered body, it's serving as a more stage friendly alternative to an acoustic, going with the top built as if it were to be an acoustic instrument was more for a general tonal shaping be...

Re: Baritone 12 string
Doing that exact kind of research, i found a couple ways around things (mixing guitar strings and Bajo Sexto, and/ or Bass VI strings namely) i think i am leaning away from the braced spruce top until i've made a few more standard electrics, and heading more towards routed tone chambers. i have litt...

Re: Baritone 12 string
i'm currently leaning towards a modified Longhorn shape, i'm building the body, with Either maple sides and back and a spruce top, with a maple core centre, OR getting a little non-traditional with a foam and fiberglass layup body also with a maple centre. in either the top is spruce and braced like...
