Re: carbon reinforced neck: trussrod yes or no
Hi Barry and Jarno, Thank you for the replies. I do wonder if a trussrod will be doing anything against the stiffness of the carbon rod, hence the carbon fibre being being up to 10 times stiffer compared to steel. I will keep your tip in mind barry, about sanding the surface of carbon together with ...

carbon reinforced neck: trussrod yes or no
Hi, I'm in doubt here. I want to build some guitars with a few laminated carbonfibre/epoxy sheets between my wood layers. I wonder if it still needs a trussrod. The wood will be thermo modified frake (limba/korina) with maybe a center strip of wenge or maple. They will be comercial builds so I also ...

Single Humbucker wiring
Hi there, For a Les Paul Jr build for my girlfriend, I was searching for a good wiring diagram (1 tone, 1 volume, 1 humbucker). Now I found two variants to wire the tonepot. Can anyone tell me what's the difference? Which one has advantages compared to the other? https://preview.redd.it/single-humbu...

ayous (thermo) neck
Hi all, I wonder if ayous/obeche, laminated with a carbon strip (6mm) in the middle would be suitable for a guitar neck. I know it can be used as a body wood (I believe PRS even use it in some customshop builds). I know it's soft and light but would it be strong enough paired with the carbon and a r...

Re: The hard and the soft of it
Hi Gene I would not worry to much about the difference in hardness in body woods. I've used hard maple tops with pretty dense swamp ash without any problems. Just use sanding blocks (avoid sanding without blocks at all). A neck pocket in a spruce body should be strong enough. Fender uses spruce bodi...

Learning to build tube amps
Hi all, I'm searching for good books and kits to learn how to build, modify and eventually design my own ptp tube amps. I was thinking about ordering a simple kit of a 5F1 based amp for a start, but I don't want to just blindly follow a manual, I want to understand what i'm doing, what part does wha...

6 way rotary switch wiring diagram
Hi there, For a new build of a semi hollow electric guitar I'm searching for a wiring diagram for 2 widerange humbuckers with a 6 way rotary switch and 1 tone and volume knob. the positions would be: 1. Humbucker bridge 2. Single coil bridge (the coil closest towards the neck) 3. Both humbuckers 4. ...

Roasted ash neck/fingerboard
I have some plans for a new build (a series of three to start with). The guitar will be completely made out of thermo-ash. Because I want to make a one piece neck/fingerboard like the maple necks from fender, with carbon fibre as trussrod strip, I was wondering if roasted white ash will be hard enou...

Re: What electric guitars have you built because you couldn't buy it?
This one is a copy of a Rickenbacker 650 Dakota. Worked out pretty good and sounded likewise, made mainly out of leftover parts and woods. I sometimes regret selling it. Maple neck-thru construction with Walnut wings, greenheart fretboard, Gretsch filtertron pickups and a stainless steel pickguard. ...

Roast your own Ash
Hi there, I was wondering if it's possible to roast your own wood, lets say in a kitchen oven. I would like to use some roasted ash for a couple of bodies but can't seem to find any suppliers here in Europe that provide the right dimensions for a body. I once placed some old spruce body blanks in th...

Build your own preamp
Hi All, Long time since i've posted on the forum but I have a small dilemma with plans for a new acoustic guitar. I want to build an acoustic guitar with preamp knobs on the top of the guitar, like on an electric guitar. So say 4 knobs (volume, bass, midd and treble), the battery holder will be situ...

Re: Glueing a Tru-oiled neck
Hi Bryan,
The neckpocket will be bare wood. Only the neck will be finished in tru-oil before gluing the body and neck together. The body itself will be finished before joining with the neck but the pocket stays unfinished.

Re: Glueing a Tru-oiled neck
Hi Marc, interesting. What exactly do you mean with polymerisation? Does the tru-oil reacts with (for example) titebond in some kind of way?

Glueing a Tru-oiled neck
For my recent builds, I want to finish my neck with tru-oil and the body with a Nitrocellulose finish. Therefor I want to oil the neck and finish the body seperately and then glue them togetheter. Is it possible to glue a tru-oil finished neck to bare wood or should I glue first and then oil? Thanks...

Re: Squier VM Jaguar bridge swap
thanks guys, I'll try to post a picture of the actual guitar this evening. I did post this at work so searched for a simular guitar on google. indeed this is not the standard jaguar bridge. She's already using 011 strings. I have thought about a shaller bridge like this one: http://www.atgp.nl/eigen...

Squier VM Jaguar bridge swap
Hey guys, Last night my girlfriend asked me if I could change the bridge of her squier jaguar with something more stable. Unfortately it's kind of an ought bridge design so I couldn't come up with a standard solution. Any ideas on how to fix this? Reason for changing the bridge is staying in tune mo...

Re: My Rickenbacker 650D copy
Hi there Alexander, I used Tru-oil. About 6 layers just wiped on with some clear cloth (old t-shirts). Nice finish although I should polish it with steelwool. @ Jim: Sorry for using a fictional username. I have no idea how to change it to my real name in my account settings. It must be more then 8 y...

Re: My Rickenbacker 650D copy
Some specs: Neck: Maple Body: Walnut fretboard: Some kind of rosewood scale: 24" pickups: Filtertrons It has a 4 way rotary switch to select Neck, neck+bridge out of phase, neck+bridge in phase, bridge. The other control is volume. In my experience I almost never use a tone control so I left th...
