Re: Experimental (hammered) dulcimer/zither build
That's a pretty ambitious project. I built an HD with 90 strings (3 strings/course) based on Charlie Alms' book. It is heavy and tuning all those strings is a pain in the neck. It has a 1/4" plywood back and a floating redwood top (1/4" too IIRC). It does have fairly substantial internal b...

End-of-the-year giveaway!
Hi all, For this end-of-the-year giveaway, I'll give out four StewMac $100 USD gift certificates! It will work like our previous ones- to enter, add a post to this thread saying so. The first responder is 1, the second is 2, and so on. When the time ends, I'll use a random number generator to pick f...

Re: Tsimbl/hammered dulcimer newbie questions, part 1
I've built a couple of HDs, one with a floating (redwood) top and one with a fixed (spruce) top. They've both held up fine and I put sound holes in both. I don't think one is easier than the other. Both tops were about 1/4" thick, but I did have to edge glue them up. You might also check out ou...

Re-hairing a renaissance bow?
Hi all,
I'm just wondering how hard/expensive it is to rehair a bow myself. This is a renaissance viola da gamba bow, probably student grade.
Thanks,
Charlie

Guitar appraisals in Canada?
Hi all,
Andreas Barth's widow is trying to get some of his (Willow Guitars) work appraised in Canada. She says most shops there (as in the US) don't want to do appraisals for custom guitars. Any suggestions?

Re: How to mark HD bridges
I have a couple of HDs and neither of them has markings. My teacher never said anything about adding markers either. However, I did run across this pdf, and looking at page 10, there is a reference for adding markers at the root of the common major scales. https://www.westcoastharps.com/uploads/2/3/...

Thanks Bob, Karl and other. You are correct, we get very little from the Amazon link. StewMac now has a good affiliate program, so if you're buying from them, please use the link (top of the page) and we get a little back. Finally, as has been noted, you can financially contribute using the PayPal l...

It was an 18 oz cup, so rather big. Perhaps too stiff?

Well, it's from a plastic Dixie cup instead of a yogurt cup. It is starting to make some noise but it's kind of hit or miss.

The 3d printed cornamuse can be found here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:38656. It hasn't been updated since 2012 though. The origin of that design I think was: http://web.archive.org/web/20011227123922/members.aol.com/gerraith/corna.htm#5.%20Making%20the%20reed although one of the drawings is ...
