Re: My Dano tribute guitar
Good to see you again, Mark Swanson! This is completed now; the low-profiled switches are for on/off and phase-reversing of each pickup individually. The neck came from an Ibanez RG-470 that was literally rescued from a dumpster. I went semi-traditional with a 100k volume and 1M tone pot, and a Spra...

My Dano tribute guitar
IMG_20160419_114001.jpg Seems like forever and a day since I've been here, but hello to a lot of my "veteran" MIMF'ers who I've not chatted with in a while. This is a piece I made at work in between repairs, and these last 7 months as a full-time guitar repairperson have been some of the ...

Curing a low E saddle volume issue
I have a customer having some slight issues with volume balance; this is a re-work from previous repairpersons' attempt to fix it without success. The first thing I tried was shimming the saddle, as the slot's too wide, that took the volume from being too high to being a bit lower on the low E, but ...

Re: Back in my element, finally
Wow! Fast-forward 3 years, a divorce behind me, and back in the hometown working as the repairman at our local music store, and I really HAVE found my calling! I'm glad to be where I am, but I never saw the roller-coaster ride I was gonna take to get here; still, it's great to be here!

Never mind; I figured it out and made a very nice bone replacement.

Peavey Predator nut slot - flat or radiused?
Been a while since I was here, but I have a repair waiting for me tomorrow morning, and I'm trying to get it all lined up in advance. Anyone else ever worked on these, and before you ask, no, I didn't check if it was a US-made model or not, and don't know if that makes a difference on this issue.

Re: 12AX7 vacuum tube - preference of manufacturer?
Thanks everyone. JJ sounds like the way to go here. My pots have a tiny opening in the top, so I cleaned/lubed all of them. Nice difference!

12AX7 vacuum tube - preference of manufacturer?
I'm looking to grab a spare/replacement tube for my Marshall ValveState 8040 amp, and am wondering which manufacturer would be my best bet for overall consistency? I know in theory, the maker should be secondary to the application, but it's been since tubes were still fairly common in other gadgets ...

Re: Has anyone used E-6000 for instrument-related applications?
It resembles rubber cement some before it sets, but it holds tight once it cures. I don't know its durability when/if under constant tension yet, but I made a small hammer with a leather pad for the head, and it did really good with the short impacts; how much was the glue vs. leather, don't know 10...

Has anyone used E-6000 for instrument-related applications?
The title says it all, really. I've used it for joining wood for decorative carvings, and it works great, IMO. I didn't know if anyone uses it in place of epoxy for anything, maybe inlays or peg head veneers, something intended to be permanently fixed like that. It does adhere leather to wood better...

Re: is tradtion holding us back wood wise?
Hi Al! I've decided to try what I find on whatever my next build is. I'm lucky to have a free supply of broken/loose skid (pallet) wood at my new job, and that consists of hard maple, poplar, pine, Douglas fir, cedar, and oak, mainly (plus the occasional scrap aluminum and steel). Receiving large an...

Re: Back in my element, finally
Thanks, Mark! I like this new format, and recent developments may give me some potential repair opportunities at some point. Times are still shaky around here, as some of the local music shops have cut back hours or closed shop outright. A lot is riding on the band I've joined to get word around, an...

Back in my element, finally
Hello, all. Seems like forever since I was here last, but after 3 long years of ups and downs, I'm back at a point where playing and building are once again a reality, but taking things gradually while I continue to do some major "life-overhauling". I see I've got a lot of catch-up learnin...
