Re: Crack in headstock veneer
Looks like most of it would be hidden by the truss rod cover. Filling with matching wood would work but if you are going to route a channel then I would think about using it to advantage and make it look like part of your design as a center stripe. Maybe use black/white/black strips with a piece of ...

We needed more like him. He really did inspire a generation of folk singers and banjo players.

Re: Intro before I get bitten by yet another craft-art
Fender necks are one piece maple. The truss rod channel is routed from the back of the neck. One consideration for the type of wood is the ability to hold the fretwire which has small barbs that hold it in place. Also, softer woods are more easily worn. Martin and Gibson used mahogany for the neck a...

Re: Neck Bolt Alignment Techniques
I think John's idea of using a thin template with centerpunch at the hole locations is the most appropriate for this application so that you make sure the neck end and sides are in the correct orientation to the pocket. A thin piece of wood would also work by "inking" the neck with somethi...

Great looking guitars. Maple and lacquer just go together perfectly I think.

Re: Installing these threaded neck inserts
I've not had any problems with brass 8-32 inserts although larger ones could be used. It does make it easy to take the neck on and off to adjust the truss rod, which I often put in the heel. Wood screws like the traditional Fenders aren't a bad thing, I just started doing it when those had stripped ...

Re: Installing these threaded neck inserts
My other post didn't post. So, this is somewhat of a repeat. I use inserts like these from Woodcraft. Here's a pointer to their instructions. http://www2.woodcraft.com/PDF/77A27.pdf Don't be tempted to drive them in with a screwdriver. They will definitely break on you. I use the t-handle tool but B...

Re: Chestnut electric guitar, first build! (need help ._.)
Coming along nicely, Leonardo. Hope your exams went well. I have a small postal electronic postal scale that measures up to about 10 pounds or so. Not extremely accurate, I'm sure, but cheap and seems close enough. I use it to measure the weight as things progress and it's interesting to see how muc...

Re: Using wood from antiques?
You mention that he left some wood in addition to the tools. Wonderful legacy. I have an old Stanley plane that was my fathers and it always makes me smile to watch it make the same curls it did for him when I was a boy. Treasure them but a lot of old tools were meant to be used. Go through the wood...

Re: 1 humbucker wiring possibility
Some Jazz Bass wiring is similar to your diagram with a master tone thrown in. Google Jazz Bass wiring. You might also look at mods posted online. You can add a switch or push-pull pot to get series-parallel which would be a fairly easy mod. Another simple mod would be to do a reverse so you could g...

Re: Diameters of commonly used drum sanders?
Many of us have built very reliable drum sanders from locally available parts so it isn't clear what concerns you would have about going forward. I've built 3 iterations, improving each time, and used the same 22"x5" drum with 3/4" pillow blocks, 3/4" steel shaft and a 1 HP 1750 ...

Re: Between you, me, and everybody else who hangs around the lamppost on the streetcorner.
MIMF (and frets.com) were some of the first internet sites I stumbled onto and it's been great to have so much knowledge literally at your fingertips. Like Jason, I bought Sloane's book way back in the 1970's and read it over and over but somehow didn't find the time to get started. I think watching...
