Thanks Micheal,
The nut is made from indian rosewood as far as i can tell. My friend has some filt under the strings because they were rattling against the board so an increase in hight wouldn't hurt. Do the same rules apply as for a fretted instument?

Replacing "nut" on an upright bass
Hello,
A good friend of mine asked me if i could replace the nut on his chinese upright bass. I've never really done this and was wondering if anybody has any advice? He uses it for rock n roll/ rock a billy purposes.
thanks in advance

Re: Headstock angle and break angle at bridge on an archtop
Not cutting or drilling any holes in the top Mark. Except for the f holes obviously. Mabee ill add a sound post if it's needed but my Isana works fine without it.
Nice little bit of controlable feedback at high gain. Haven't we had this whole "different beast" discussion already.

Re: Headstock angle and break angle at bridge on an archtop
Mark,
The Isana is an acoustic instrument and im building it along those lines. It may not be fully acoustic because its laminated but
my Isana sounds fine. So this thread is kinda a grey area. If there's a point your trying to make please expound.

Re: Headstock angle and break angle at bridge on an archtop
I would never modify an old instrument like that. I cust the poles off a p90 and wedged a strip of wood i mounted to the bottom of the pickup between the bridge. As far as my build goes. The top sounds about as hard as a skateboard deck when i tap it with my knuckles. It had some taptone before i gl...

Re: Headstock angle and break angle at bridge on an archtop
Thats great Beate! The instrument i put the bigsby on is acually an isana!. It's an acoustic archtop and far as i can tell its made to be one. It's very old and unfortunately some one drilled a bunch of holes in the top for pickups. I played it acousticly for about 2 years but im using it now for a ...

Re: Headstock angle and break angle at bridge on an archtop
Mark, I wasn't trying to be a smart-ass or anything. Anyway. It's a Gretsch style guitar. Laminated top/back and sides and two tv jones pickups. I'm trying to get a bit of extra tone out of the guitar and thought it could mabee be won by playing around with the break angle to " drive" the ...

Re: Headstock angle and break angle at bridge on an archtop
I agree with everything being said here :D . I know that a laminate will never sound like an acoustic archtop. The lack in body size and the complete lack of a recurve alone make it pretty much impossible. The bracing/soundpost's i've seen on gretsch's are all quite big "quenching" the aco...

Re: Headstock angle and break angle at bridge on an archtop
It's actualy a gretsch style guitar. This might be the wrong part of the forum for this discussion but i guess this section has more acoustic experience. I've built an acoustic archtop before and this is a laminate. The top with bracing feels very stiff to me. To me it would indeed seem that there's...

Headstock angle and break angle at bridge on an archtop
So this morning i was figuring out the neck angle on a archtop im building and i got to thinking. Why do violins and upright basses have such a high bridge? Is it for bow clearance? Thing is i've owned a couple of les pauls and all the ones that sound good had a healthy amount of break angle at the ...

Re: Ebony binding
ok..
So i slept on it a night. I sanded the binding. Then masked the top with waxy masking tape and put a wet piece of towel on my iron..works like a charm.

Re: Ebony binding
That sounds very close to the way i do it except i do it free hand at a very very slow rate. To be honest i'm amazed that it
breaks the way it does. Its like feels like i'm bending graphite or something.

Ebony binding
I'm trying to bind an acoustic guitar with ebony binding and finding it near to impossible to bend it using my side bender.
Has anybody had this problem?
