Re: Ibanez Weeping WD7 Demon
Thank you! I actually just figured it out today reading blogs. Someone made the comment that it is easy to lose the spring when the back is taken off. That tipped me off that this is a normal occurrence. That triggered the revelation that there really isn't anything to hold it in place and sure enou...

Ibanez Weeping WD7 Demon
Does anyone have one of these that can take the back off and take a couple of close-up pictures of the configuration of the spring lock mechanism that holds the battery/on-off switch door locked down? Something popped out on mine and I had three pieces rattling around inside when I opened it. The si...

Re: P90 noise when bending strings
I was looking at a pre-owned guitar (just can't bring myself to call it used when it has a $3k price tag on it) that was a custom build. The guitar was a maple hollow body, all natural, all carved, beautiful instrument. When I played it, the sound was like magic but there was buzz like crazy. Even w...

Re: thoughts on a contractor saw
I was off on vacation this week. Decided to buy myself a present! Sawstop contractors saw with the upgraded Biesemeyer style fence. I replaced the extension table with a router table from MLCS. It worked out nice. Since I had that leftover extension table with no where to put it I fashioned a bracke...

Here is the section of the build blog with the details of the disaster and the resulting surgical fix.

Re: does anyone make a pattern bit that doesnt fall apart?
I've had it vibrate loose while using it and then it moves up and you lose registration on the pattern. It carves a lovely gouge into the side of the instrument when that happens. I would like to say that I learned from my mistakes, but I forgot to check one just this weekend and 'chukka chukka gron...

Some shops that sell high end hardwood will do it for you. Check for hardwood, wood mill etc in your area.

Re: possible mods/hot rodding my go-to axe
Another simple thing to consider, get a cheap guitar (a cheap electric guitar these days is actually pretty good, and can be made quite playable) and use it to experiment on. Try everything you want on that and when you find the sounds you like, build them into your good axe. That is the best recom...

Re: possible mods/hot rodding my go-to axe
I have one of the HCP pots installed. It lets you blend from full humbucker to full single coil and anywhere inbetween. It is a great tool and much better than just a switch to toggle between the two.

Re: Natural Masked Binding
I have already finished one of my guitars by first wiping on some black stain, then sanding it down. This produced an ugly grayish color that I went over with the red stain I used for the color. Again, this dried to an ugly red-brown that really began to come alive under the coats of clear. I spray...

Re: is tradtion holding us back wood wise?
I play a lot of notes of the low B string. Even the 8 stringer I am planning here will be a 4 string with the added harmony strings, and tuned B-E-A-D. Thus, I am hunting for a "deep, dark, growly, thunderous" natural tone without too much electronic aid. Your biggest problem here is that...

Re: is tradtion holding us back wood wise?
I don't know about the tone, but it would weigh a ton and a half. Harder, dense woods give a lot of sustain, and often give a brittle tone with a lot of snap. If I wanted bottom I'd go with something like walnut or mahogany. The majority of the wood in the body of the five string that I built is wa...

Re: looking for bass amp suggestions
I just bought a Behringer Ultrabass 180 head for $152. I built one of the Fearful 212 cabinets for it and it sounds incredibly good. I read bad reviews on this thing so I bought it from somewhere I could return it and I didn't need to at all. I like this thing. I just build a smaller 10 cabinet with...

Try warming up the can of lacquer in a bowl of hot water before spraying. Seemed to help me.

Re: 5 Position Rotary Switch Plate
Just an update on this. I installed two new pickups into the guitar. I installed a Duncan Jazz at the neck and a Duncan DimeBucker at the bridge. Now if that doesn't give the guitar a case of schizophrenia, nothing will. I also installed the Humbucker Control Pot into the guitar and added the option...

Beautiful work. I really like the look of the wedge in the back. It might be there because it is expedient, but I think it really looks nice.

Ron, Here is the page of my build blog that talks about how I grain filled my bass with shellac. There is also a good link to an in depth article that I used as a basis for my decision to go this way. http://thewaywardluthier.wordpress.com/2012/07/18/it-isnt-the-mountain-ahead-that-wears-you-out-its...
