New home and shop
Hey All, well some things have happened since the last time I was on this website. Like My wife doesn't want to be married to me anymore, so I moved on. We had a lot of good times. So now I bought my own house, I have a good sized out building so I can continue with my luthier projects, and no one w...

Re: Introduction and progress my first build.
Gotta say, that's a nice looking guitar. Don't go nuts with complicated engineering with the top bracing, as everyone here is telling you, go as light as you can or the sound suffers. They're right! I over did the bracing on my first sound board replacement and it's OK, but I think it lacks in the l...

Re: Shop size?
I wish my shop was that big. My shop is a car and a half deep garage that I share an oil tank and water softening system with. My Volvo got evicted! I need to make my bench smaller. It's 48 x 72 inches made out of a solid Birch door slab. Got a great deal on it.

Top wood
I'm putting material together for my next build. Not sure what size I'm going with. So far I have Cherry back and sides, Mahogany neck Rosewood finger board and bridge. I purchased a Bearclaw Canadian spruce top. Is bearclaw spruce OK?

Re: Homemade Bending Iron : Diameter? Metal? Temperature?
Don Teeter has plans for a bending Iron, Or pipe, mounted on a stand in his book The acoustic guitar. Plenty of ideas and plans for making homemade tools and fixtures of all kinds. I've made a lot of them and they work well. He is a toolmaker by trade as am I, so that helps. But I think anyone with ...

My old flat top
Back a while ago, I posted some info on my brothers Yamaha 12 string I inheritated. Scott mentioned what he thought I should do. Bridge plate replacement,( larger than original) and neck reset. So ive been thinking about this and I may have the time to do it now. I've been looking at material for th...

Re: old flat top
I'm not t totally a novice. I've done a bunch of other work on guitars. Including my own, after Reading Teeters book on repair and maintenance The Acoustic guitar. The book was very helpful , and because I am a tool maker by trade I made some of his fixtures. I've also read William Compianos book Gu...

Re: old flat top
Mark, you were also correct about the label, it's a red Nippon Gakki.

Re: old flat top
Hello Mark, The bridge plate is small and thin. So I will try replacing it. It's amazing how thin they made the laminates, I would have thought it was solid. And you were correct about the neck angle, it's off. So a neck reset is inline. I've done a lot of repair work in the last few years, but neve...

old flat top
I recently, well about 11 months ago inherited my brothers 1965 Yamaha 12 string. The sound is unbelievable. It appears to be a copy of a Martin. Unfortunately the action is very high. At closer inspection with a mirror and flashlight, the bracing looks like tooth picks. I've never seen a guitar wit...
