I buy my blades from Suffolk Machinery they have all sorts of tooth styles and they weld to any length your saw needs. Good people, I’ve used them for years.

Re: Rust removal on flat double cut bastard file
I’ve soaked files is household vinegar, depending on how much rust you are dealing with a couple hours to over night brush with a brass brush after a couple hours as a test. When finished rinse with hot water, dry immediately with a paper towel and heat gun. I resurrected a bunch of Swiss pattern ne...

Good for you. What belts did you end up using on the saw?

Re: Ideas Wanted for Cross-Notching Aluminum Rod
You could use a core box bit in a router table. Make a sled to ride a slot it the table and clamp the rod to the sled. A couple passes raising the bit till you reach the depth you need. Router bit will route the aluminum just fine.

Nice jig and well done on the video. I like that you can adapt it to other purposes. Even though I made a jig for dovetail joints I might make one like yours for ‘ other purposes ‘.

Re: about using an eggbeater drill
Reading Marks post up thread I decided to search my pics. Here is my take on what he described. And old drill chuck from an obsolete battery drill, and a chunk of curly maple that once was firewood but I couldn’t burn it. It has proved very useful. https://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m628/boatman53...

Re: Steam generation
Another vote for the wallpaper steamer. I’ve steamed many boat planks with mine, so it can produce more steam than than you need even for double bass sides.

Re: Steam Box Deluxe
Those look awesome. The stainless doesn’t offer much in the way of heat retention so they will benefit from having some sort of insulation wrapped around them. As a boatbuilder I’ve built many steam boxes and helped a friend with a steaming project. He had used a pvc pipe and steam was coming out wh...

Re: dovetail jigs for Ukes.
I made these a while ago, they are totally adjustable to fine tune the fit. They worked great, now I just need to get back to making ukes. http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m628/boatman53/IMG_2186_zpsszksivci.jpg http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m628/boatman53/IMG_2187_zpsaa1jsyij.jpg http://i1...

Re: inexpensive spokeshave?
I think the aftermarket blade you were thinking of is Hock and they are very good.
I'm a big fan of spokeshave and have maybe thirty, ten get used regularly each set a bit different and of course that and round soles.

Re: Slow bench grinder OR diamond stone?
I've been away for quite some time but am starting to have some free time again (the high cost of getting by). Anyway here is an option that I have in my shop, a CBN wheel on a hand cranked grinder. I originally had the wheel mounted to an electric grinder, it cuts very fast and most importantly ver...

Re: Langeleik plans
I will do that. I know many people in Norway speak English. Which made it very easy to travel there. Almost everyone under 30 learned it in school. My problem was I always wanted to talk to the old guys with the old skills, knife making, boatbuilding, langeleiks etc. Thank you very much for your hel...

Re: Langeleik plans
Hi Arnt, My mother in law grew up I Norway, still owns a house kragro. The instrument pictured above was in her family as long as she could remember. Her sister used to play it. The last time I was in Norway I tried to find out something about that style of lageleik but failed. I did however get a b...

Re: Langeleik plans
No staple frets in this one. They look to be bone or antler. They also are quite high so no playing notch. The grain and weight of the wood does not suggest that it is a hard wood, and I'm reluctant to remove any "finish" to investigate beyond visual.

Re: Langeleik plans
I have been working on some plans for a langeleik. I started it a while ago, got busy with other things. Might be able to pull it together in a couple of weeks if I worked on it. What I did was measure an old instrument that was in my wife's family. There are some things with it that I don't underst...
