Re: And, it's done! (5-string fiddle)

It's a beauty. I love the purfling on the back.

And, man would I be nervous balancing my brand new 5 string fiddle on my car's roof rack while I stepped back just out of reach to take a picture. Potential Energy is not your friend!

Re: Spray Guns - Sata or harbor freight

I've never had a harbour freight gun (or any other gun), but I am very happy with my Sata MiniJet IV. It works great for guitars and small furniture projects spraying shellac, nitrocellulose lacquer, and water based lacquer. It was not cheap, but I'm happy with it. The MiniJet would be small for a l...

Re: Employee title

A jury would laugh them out of court. They do not own the term engineer, only the practice. In many jurisdictions the law says otherwise...only persons registered as professional engineers may use the term engineer to describe themselves or their services. The government then delegates the authorit...

Re: Little wheel on pre-amp question (Yamaha silent guitar) and jackpin rattle

(from the reviews on Yamaha site - seems rattles are a problem) Where are the reviews on the Yamaha site? I could not find any other people complaining about rattles when I was searching for information on this guitar. There's another smaller rattle in the MP3 line-in jack. Thanks for the contact i...

No, it's definetly not connected to anything you can adjust from the outside when it's reassembled.
Thanks,

Re: Employee title

We have group of carpenters, painters, mechanics etc, with trade certificates. Some do work of a typical janitor, but all do assist or perform special tasks when necesseary. Which common name would be suitable for this group of people? We have a similar company. If you can have multiple titles, I m...

Little wheel on pre-amp question (Yamaha silent guitar) and jackpin rattle

I have a new Yamaha silent guitar SLG-130NW. Quite nice and excellent for travel. I am in China on a business trip and plugged in the ¼ line out jack for the first time, which resulted in an annoying rattle when playing. I took the electronics apart to fix the rattle, which requiring some paper shim...

Re: Looking for spray gun suggestions for water borne finishes

The Sata MiniJet IV with 0.8 and 1.2mm SR nozzles has worked great for me with shellac, nitro, and Target waterborne finishes. I also use the SATA RPS mixing cup system.

After replacing the lid, give the bottle of glue a little tap on your workbench to knock down any liquid that is hanging up at the tip.

Re: Best glue for little chips

ps. I always use safety glasses when opening a bottle of superglue. This is because I once opened a bottle and some glue shot out under pressure and almost hit me in the eye. I don't know why the bottle pressurized as it was a bottle I had opened weeks earlier then recorked; not like it was a new bo...

Re: Best glue for little chips

One tip for cyanoacrylate, which I think is one of the better choices for fixing small chips, it that cyanoacrylate cures when exposed to moisture . I live in a dry climate and found using cyanoacrylate hit or miss until I started adding a bit of moisture to the wood. What used to happen is that I w...

Did you leave the masking tape on the surface of the neck when you glued the fretboard on?

Re: fitting binding to profiled sides

I used a 25' radius on the top and a 15' radius on the back of a classicial guitar with a cutaway. I found that I had to make some binding groove adjustments on both sides of the back, and a small adjustment to the binding groove on the cutaway side of the top in order to accomodate the radius geome...

Last night my guitar sang to me for the first time

Last night I was sanding back the finish on my classical guitar prior to spraying the final coats of Mohawk guitar lacquer. The air compressor kicked on and the guitar started to hum as the top vibrated in response :D The guitar is coming to life! The finish thickness has really affected the tap vol...

1. Sharpening chisels & plane blades to the point where whisper thin shaving can be taken from end-grain. 2. Sharpening card-scrapers. 3. Fettling your tools - flattening the backs of your chisels, ensuring you have a "square" square and a "straight" straight-edge, making a s...

Re: Guitar Making Course?

Hi Ciaran, I'm building my first classical guitar at the moment using Bogdanovich's video. A local woodworking store offers a very similar course to the one you are considering. The course builds a steel string guitar on 12 Saturdays (I think tuition was $1200 CDN), with six students. I almost signe...

Re: Has anyone used "Super-Soft 2" veneer softener to bend sides?

I'll give you my beginner's experience.... First, I have some experience building furniture as a hobby and have flattened veneers using a couple different brands of softener. SSII does seem to work better than the other veneer softeners I've used. Second, for my first guitar build I had a lot of tro...

Re: Question about French polish

One thing I found when learning to French Polish smaller objects, like guitars, is that I tended to work the surface for too long - it would look fine, but I had softened the polish too much. Then when I turned the piece to work on the other side, the first side was still soft and was damaged. I als...

Re: Q on bracing the back

My guess is that if you glue the centre strip down first, then you can easily shape and sand the strip while it is in place. If you glue the braces in first and fit the centre strip pieces between the braces, then sanding the strip in place is more difficult and you have to do your shaping before gl...
