Re: CNC Software Suggestions
I've downloaded the demos for several products and unless something changes in the next few days (they have a special running until the end of the month) I'm going with RhinoCAD and RhinoCAM. I did the webinar with Mecsoft and they were very helpful and informative. It looks like they provide good s...

Re: CNC Software Suggestions
The company I work for uses Solidworks. I understand that it's great but I don't want to be dependent on a company resource and it's way to expensive to get for myself. Geomagic, formerly Alibre, is a parametric program that is supposed to be good but the basic package starts at about $2000 versus R...

CNC Software Suggestions
I purchased a second hand CNC router and now I'm trying to decide on CAD/CAM software. I've used AutoCAD extensively for 2D work but have done very little 3D. I've tried a few demos and at the moment I'm leaning toward Rhinoceros with either MadCam or RhinoCAM. RhinoCAM seems to have more features a...

Re: Seeking insurance advice for home shop.
David, I can tell you how that happened because I ran into the same thing. It's common practice for a lot of insurance companies to assume that your house will increase in value and put in an automatic increase every so often. Since most people just pay the bill every year without looking at the det...

Re: Call for auction items
Rats! I've been preoccupied and forgot all about the auction closing on Monday. It looks like a couple of the items I found interesting didn't even sell. I hate being stupid.

Re: Employee title
I wouldn't count on that. They don't own the term but they do regulate and the practice. I can't speak for other states, but if you are a licensed or registered professional in this one then you are also subject to a little thing called the Professional Privilege Tax and they take that part seriousl...

Re: Employee title
I don't disagree. I wouldn't want someone unqualified designing a bridge any more than I'd want an operation from an unlicensed doctor. However, Tennessee seems to take this to the extreme and doesn't apply it evenly. If you call your business Carpet Engineer or one of our companies' developers who ...

Re: Employee title
A friend started a cleaning company called Tennessee Industrial Maintenance Engineers. It wasn't long before he got a call from the state commerce department board of engineering examiners wanting to know his qualifications for calling himself an engineer and informing him that he was required to pa...

Re: Terz Guitar
Is your guitar braced for steel strings? I am a fan of the Martin Size 5 Terz guitars and it wasn't until some time around the late 1920's that they started bracing them for steel strings. For Terz tuning with steel strings they recommend custom light MSP 4050 strings, which is kind of between a lig...

Re: Video Download Software?
I didn't see the freebie until too late but thanks anyway, Alain. I did try the Firefox Video Download Helper as well as a flash download add in with no joy. I got the same result when I tried what was a working install of Miro on my XP machine. YouTube periodically makes changes designed to stop vi...

Video Download Software?
Can anybody recommend a good program to download videos from YouTube? For some time now I've used an open source program called Miro to download videos and save them to an Mpeg format. When I find a song I like, I download the video, use another program to save the audio portion to an MP3, and feed ...

Thanks Jim! I knew that a very limited editing function was added some time ago but I hadn't realized how much it would now do. It just keeps getting better and I missed that one.

Re: how to make jpeg file smaller
I second the recommendation of Irfanview. I've used it for years and it's a great little program. You can't edit individual pixels but it's hard to beat for things like cropping, resizing, and color correction.

Hygrometer Calibration
This may be a stupid question but in the great discussion on dew point calibration, Mario recommended a cheap mechanical hygrometer and said that they are easily calibrated. I was just looking at such a device at the local Woodcraft and for the life of me I saw no way to calibrate it. There were no ...

My first real exposure to Pete was two sets of live double albums that he did with Arlo Guthrie in the late 1970's. Great stuff.

You can find pipettes at most hobby stores, amazon.com, and, while I haven't seen them in the store, you can order them from Walmart.com as well.

US Customs Destroys Instruments
Boujemaa Razgui is a musician who plays handcrafted flutes called Neys. Digging deeper into the links it appears that in addition to 11 handcrafted flutes, he was carrying some sort of reeds that he uses as raw material to make flutes. Customs mistook the reeds for bamboo and, making no effort to co...
