Re: 7 string, medium scale bass in the design process.
Yeah, more of it broke. I came up with a pickup surround made from some plexiglass I had on hand.

Re: 7 string, medium scale bass in the design process.
Filled in around the pickup with wall filler, saw dust and brown ink. When it dries I'll make it look pretty. The body is dry in this pic. It's coated with two part epoxy resin applied straight onto the wood. It really made the figure pop, but it's a pain to buff out. It's naturally shiny but it abs...

Re: 7 string, medium scale bass in the design process.
Alexander,
It probably would have been easier.
I would give you a reason why if I had one. Chalk it up to poor planning and a learning experience.
It probably would have been easier.

Re: 7 string, medium scale bass in the design process.
Okay, did some more work to this thing. I will post pics tonight when I get home from work. I am dropping the headless idea, as well as the 7 string bass idea. I'm making a bass vi type instrument since I have wanted one for about two decades now. To save time I ordered a premade guitar neck that is...

Improving a cheap ukulele?
I've never played, built, or worked on a ukulele. I've build guitars and basses, and I am a decent bass player. I do all my own set up work and have basic tools. I recently ordered two ukuleles for my young daughters. They are cheap and have mixed reviews. I was wondering what sort of things I can d...

Re: basswood stage acoustic
Okay then, so electronics, skill of builder, and skill of player in approximate order? If I build it than I know that I can get at least one of the three.

Re: basswood stage acoustic
Ive got a basswood Ibanez Mikro bass that has held up very well and sounds just fine. I use it for live performances all the time, especially when I dont want to carry my J bass around for a couple of hours. It's sound isn't absolutely amazing, but it's not poor either. Honestly, I think the skill o...

basswood stage acoustic
Hi, I have some 12/4 basswood available to me and I was thinking about making a stage acoustic (nylon w/Piezo) by carving out sections of a basswood body and adding a top. I know basswood is used quite a bit in inexpensive solid bodies. I was wondering if anyone had used it for an acoustic guitar, a...

Re: 7 string, medium scale bass in the design process.
I was reading up on friction pegs and I came across the following statement. "on bass guitars, where string tension is extremely high, larger, heavier-duty machine heads than those used on guitars are used." I was under the impression that the treble strings have greater tension than the b...

Re: 7 string, medium scale bass in the design process.
Update: Last night I did some chisel and scraper sharpening, and then some scraping on the body. I'm going to clean up the pickup routes a bit tonight. Everything is on hold while I wait for my new bandsaw blade to come in the mail. I have to resaw my neck blank to get my fingerboard. I'm actually p...

Re: Thinking of making one for sale, considerations?
In the last 2 years I purchased two LP Jr style guitars from 2 different companies. The first was a xaviere. It arrived scratched up, the frets were uneven, and unplugged it just doesnt sound right. The second was a epiphone SG. It cost about half the cost of the xaviere. I bought it without playing...

Re: looking for bass amp suggestions
I recently aquired one of the new Carvin Microbass amps. I got the smallest one they make. It weighs less than 30 pounds and is 250 watts. Sounds great. I have used it now at three live events. If the event is big enough that I would need a larger amp, I just plug it into the sound board and use the...

DIY Headless Guitar Tuner?
I've been looking at several designs for inexpensive and relatively simple methods of creating tuners for headless guitars. I haven't really liked most I have seen for a variety of reasons. I had an idea: Is it possible to remove the key off of a traditional bass guitar tuner and replace it with a s...

Re: 7 string, medium scale bass in the design process.
I was looking on that website yesterday at some of the designs. I have a bunch of bass and guitar tuners on hand, so i may just end up mounting them on the body. The wood came from a scrap lumber pile at a myryle wood factory outlet in oregon. Because their were several large holes in the wood they ...

Guitar as it currently is, though I have carved the top a little bit more since the pic.

Re: 7 string, medium scale bass in the design process.
So are the strings just tied through the wing nut, and then tightened to pitch? I assume the ball ends are held at the neck end. Interesting. I wonder how stable the tuning would be with these. They are inexpensive enought that I could mock up a set and see how they work out. I may try this.
