Re: Looking for some advice on soundboard and bridge interaction on lyre.
No internal bracing, I wasnt sure an instrument this side would require it. Is bracing generally considered a better option than a support under the board which runs between the back and soundboard?
I seem to remember the soundboard is about 2-3mm, sorry I cant be more precise.

Re: Looking for some advice on soundboard and bridge interaction on lyre.
Heres a picture, unfortunately I dont have one with the warping but this shows it after i've added the changes. The warping was just a concaveness at the centre of the soundboard, previously the bridge was a much thicker solid piece of wood. There would normally be 10 strings on the instrment too. T...

Looking for some advice on soundboard and bridge interaction on lyre.
Hello I've made a 10 string lyre and now im looking to make improvements on it. Something I noticed was the pressure from the strings was pushing down on the bridge was making the soundboard concave and this created a gap in the middle under my bridge. I put some wedges under the gap just to experim...

Re: Preventing dampening/buzzing on a lyre - advice needed
Good idea. Seems quite hard to pull off.
Perhaps I could add a perl inlay to cover them up, might look random but I think would look better than otherwise.

Re: Preventing dampening/buzzing on a lyre - advice needed
Interesting idea. I wonder if that would make any noticeable difference for finger positions when plucking, it would probably be minimal. Perhaps I'll just have to test it out.

Re: Preventing dampening/buzzing on a lyre - advice needed
Yes I think that would be an option. I think it would look a bit ugly however so if I could do it another way I will, maybe making a tenon joint? Not as easy but I guess would look cleaner, wood glue is pretty strong too but with my lack of experience that would be a risk.

Re: Question about setting string tension when using a bridge
The program is here http://www.harpkit.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=MK&Category_Code=lib_stringanalysis I had to actually do a paypal transaction of 0.00 to get it. I might not have done this correctly though. Though its for harps, I think its also compatible for other instrum...

Re: Preventing dampening/buzzing on a lyre - advice needed
Heres a bit of a crude drawing i've just done. http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae22/Citaran87/exp22.jpg The drawing on the right is the large dowel rod which goes along the top. How i've designed this each string will go through a hole in the rod, then the string is tied onto a kind of peg/small ...

Preventing dampening/buzzing on a lyre - advice needed
Hello I have a quick question if anyone could help I'd appreciate it. I plan to have the strings between a zither pin at the base and a thick dowel at the top which will have holes for the strings to pass through then a small piece of wood for the string to be tied to. One thing I'm worried about is...

Question about setting string tension when using a bridge
Hello, I'm trying to make a lyre, using harp strings. I've got a nice program that lets me enter the information about the note I want, string material, length and diameter and gives me results about the tension. What i'm a bit confused about is when it comes to me using a bridge. So I will have two...

Re: A little advice on 10 string harp/lyre design.
I think I will definitely reconsider metal pegs.
Would a 16:1 reamer be less expensive than the violin 1:30 one?
Or were you suggesting that because it would be thicker so stronger?

Re: A little advice on 10 string harp/lyre design.
Hi Jon I most likely plan on using harp strings, possibly some other kind of nylon. I don't have any experience with metal pegs, I play violin and guitar. I did read somewhere that metal are more difficult to tune, stiffer or something but perhaps that's not true? Would metal pegs reguire a taper dr...

A little advice on 10 string harp/lyre design.
Hi, if anyone can help i'd be very grateful. I've never made an instrument before. But I have a plan for a 10 string harp/lyre, but have a couple of issues. First off I've decided to use wooden tuning pegs at the base of the instrument. I've seen that I could use metal pegs but they arnt very easy t...
