Re: Domestic Woods for Fingerboards

Persimmon has to be very hard and also stable as the heads of the old wooden drivers and fairway woods were made from it. I have a couple of fretboards that are persimmon and have not seen any movement in them while in storage. I agree that Osage left to its own devices will turn a dark nut brown.

Re: Adequate air-drying time for instrument woods?

When my sassafras was resawn by myself and a luthier friend of mine he recommended that I sticker them and place the stacks in my attic (actually my man cave upstairs) for at least 6 months as it is nice and warm there. The humidity is fairly constant I might add being as it is inside. While I didn'...

Re: "Free Form" Building Vs. The Mold.

Great ideas here and have moved my brain into another dimension as I have a small shop (23 x 16) but most of it is taken up by 400 bf of sapele, 300 bf of Osage, 160 bf of A Maho, and a 4'W x 8'L x 8'H storage rack for various other exotic lumber. Throw in table saw, planer, radial arm saw and other...

Re: American Sassafras build

Another change. Good thing that I'm flexible. I got a little happy with the plane while doing the join, to the tune of 1/2", so the red bear will have to be used on smaller guitar. I had another set of lutz that was a gift because I bought 7 sets so I decided to use it. This set is called choco...

Re: American Sassafras build

Slight changes so far. I have decided to build an OM sized guitar. Haven't decided on whether or not I'll do a cutaway or not, but am leaning towards the cutaway. Another change is to make a 3 piece back using Peruvian Walnut for the center wedge and that will carry onto the end flash as well. The S...

Re: Flat sawn American sycamore and sassafras

Oh thanks for the pix, drool drool. Seems like it's difficult to find good QS stock that doesn't leave one with sticker shock especially when the shipping costs are figured in!

Re: American Sassafras build

Well sorry it took so long to get back on this but my main job, for now, is driving a long haul semi which doesn't allow much time for my hobby. Glad to report that I was finally able to saw my sassafras billets into sets. I now have them drying and hopefully by this summer I can size rough size the...

Flat sawn American sycamore and sassafras

Has anyone used either sycamore or sassafras as a neck wood. Sycamore is very light and similar to maple from the info I can find. My question pertains more to the dimensional stability of flatsawn sycamore and sassafras when used to laminate a neck. I am thinking a skunk stripe of wenge could help ...

Re: Where do you get brace wood?

You can always go to the flea market and buy some really old wooden doors. When disassembled, the rails and stiles make good bracing plus you could very well be saving the doors from either the burn pile or waste management facility!

American Sassafras build

I am planning on building an acoustic D size with a cutaway out of good ole American Sassafras and have not been able to find an example to help with the thickness dimensions for the backs and sides. I am planning on final thickness being between .100 and .085, that sound correct? This is going to b...

Re: LACEY ACT UPDATE AND YOU

This makes for interesting reading and from what I am understanding about the Lacey Act it is turning all normally law abiding citizens into criminals! It appears to me that the exact thing that this country was founded upon is being totally taken away from us which is freedom. While I do agree that...
