Hide glue
Hello everyone, I have a question about glue. I have used hide glue in the past to glue body blanks and fingerboards with good results on Fender type guitars. I am now building an SG model and wonder if anyone has used hide glue for a set neck or knows of a reason not to use it there. Thanks for any...

Re: Purfling tool setup (?)
Erik, I agree with Tim. I shim the blades with metal. 1.2mm is the thickness of purfling most violins have, 1.5mm seems out of proportion to me. An overly tight fit of the purfling in the groove will make gluing the purfling in a nightmare. Use the tool as a "marker" and proceed as Tim wro...

Re: Shellac sealer
Thanks Clay. My testing results with dye in lacquer are what I am looking for. I wanted to use up some shellac I prepared for a furniture projekt but now see no need in complicating the finish schedule on the guitar.

Shellac sealer
I plan on spraying a maple neck and ash body electric with nitrocellulose lacquer and would like to seal and colour it with amber shellac. Does anyone have experience with this or foresee any problems? Of course I will test first, so maybe that will answer the question but I am thinking of long term...

Re: MMK 53 p/u
No idea James, but if you want a quick and dirty way to try it out, connect the pickup up to a jack, and hold it above the strings of your LP while strumming. You can make a jig to hold it in place if you want, but I've always found the rough and ready approach to give me a good enough idea. Thanks...

MMK 53 p/u
Hi, I have a pair of MMK 53 p/u that have a slug coil and a slotted adjustable pole piece coil, the p/u have gold plated covers. I have not tried them but I'm considering putting them in a '70s Les Paul. Does anyone here know how these would compare to the stock p/u of a Les Paul standard? Thanks Ja...

Re: bolt on, bolt IN and set necks
Hi Mark, my understanding of bolt on/in necks is that a bolt on uses wood screws that enter predrilled holes in the neck and are screwed into the neck directly whereas a bolt in neck uses machine screws that are threaded into threaded inserts installed in the neck. The term "bolt on" is co...

Re: Ash wood
Thanks for the replies. The body is routed to finished shape. This build is in tandem with a friend who is making his Tele. of walnut wood so it will be interesting to feel and hear the diff. of the guitars before we add the electronics.Of course many other things will affect the tone as well. Now,i...

Ash wood
Hi>Iam making a Telecaster guitar.I will be using a slab of flamed maple for the neck and a slab of birdseye maple for the fingerboard. The ash wood I have has almost no runout but it is northern ash and heavier than swamp ash.It is rather pretty in a Telecaster way and has a nice bold grain, finish w...
