Re: Tonal Characteristics of Cherry?
Welcome to the forum, Jeff. To me cherry sounds very similar to walnut, which sounds very similar to maple. For solid bodies I'm of the opinion that wood probably does influence the tone, but the electronics and scale length are much bigger factors. Use sound construction techniques and quality elec...

Re: Neck Carving Question
I try to keep it at 1/8" minimum but I have a feeling I've probably gone thinner once I get everything shaped and sanded. Haven't had any problems yet.

Nice!
How thick are your maple veneers? They look awful thin. Did you cut them yourself? I haven't had any luck creating veneers that thin.

Re: Carving Necks
I love microplanes as well, but they seem to wear out rather quickly. I've got a round one that is still going strong after a lot of years, but all my flat blades went dull inside a guitar or two and just slide across the wood rather than shaving it. So up to this point I've mostly used a Surform. I...

Re: Issues with string-through vs. stop tailpiece?
I've done both. I like both. Mostly I choose the method based on aesthetics for that particular guitar. One thing with string-thru is you have to deal with getting the ferrels lined up on the back. I've yet to build a guitar where they are perfect. They're close, but not perfect and I notice. So tha...

Re: Lets Talk Light Weight Woods
Before I "knew any better" my very first guitar was built with a neck and body made of Philippine mahogany. The guitar is very light weight and sounds awesome. The neck has held up fine for eight years now, although it also has a couple maple laminates in it. I've used it in a couple more ...

Re: Just finished this headless semi-hollow seven-string
Wow! Not much traditional about this guitar at all. My tastes usually run to the more orthodox designs, but I'm curiously drawn to this one. Great job!
Still not sure about that trapezoidal neck, though.

Re: Painting
I have found some good material on individual steps of repainting or fixing finishes but I have yet to run into a good tutorial on painting a newly built guitar. I have a tutorial on my web site about how to paint a newly built guitar. You'll have to be the judge on whether or not it's "good.&...

Re: So all I wanted was some hot water...
We have an empirically derived rule in my family: Never do plumbing when the store is closed. I use a baby bottle warmer for my hide glue. My wife instantiated this rule in our house as well, after one night at 9pm I decided I'd "quick replace that old faucet." Oh, no shut-off valves at t...

Re: Suggestions for building up (increasing thickness) of a neck
I once used Bondo to fill a mis-rout in the body of an electric that was receiving an opaque finish. Worked fine for that.
For .03 I doubt I'd go through the hassle of changing your thickness.
