I was taught similar to Barry. ("Make it look like this" were the precise instructions, and believe me, it had to look EXACTLY like that). Player preference will sometimes influence, also. My favorite tool for this is the little Lee Valley "Apron" plane, SHARP blade.

Re: Semi-Hemispherical fret work
"semi-hysterical Fred hens" -- :-) "quote of the day" award for sure, and earning a 2 hour luthier lunch. Just think, if guitarist would only glue little frets to each of their fingers, we wouldn't have to pound them into the fretboards. On the other hand, I do seem to recall tha...

Re: Semi-Hemispherical fret work
If I recall correctly, one of the reasons Harry (fleischman) came up w this system was as a way to deal w the pesky little overhang you can sometimes get when fret boards shrink, esp bound boards, by in effect pre shrinking the frets, and while yer at it, it gives you the chance to give them a nice ...

Go team! I seem to recall an interview w Zappa where he wa asked " so what drives you to take make the music you do?" and his answer was something like "the world already has plenty enough of ba boom boom bap, ba boom boom bap".

Re: Kif Wood's Adjustable neck
Matthew, re speaker cabinet design thoughts; 2 pieces to this... One is the notion that since the reso cone is intended as THE resonating component of the instrument, mount it to something relatively non-resonant. Similar to the smallman paradigm in classical guitar construction, or banjo's for that...

Re: Kif Wood's Adjustable neck
Kif -- many thanks for your thoughtful reply-- apologies for delayed response as I've been out of town. Indeed one of the reasons for adjustable neck is as you mentioned -- potential to go from fretted to slide ... ditto to your points wrt "speaker cabinet" thinking -- the "soundboard...

Kif Wood's Adjustable neck
A while back I recall seeing an intriguing set of posts by Kif Wood regarding how he constructs his adjustable neck joint. I'm about to start a resonator project, and found myself thinking about Kif's approach to heel block/ neck interface. However, I can't seem to find the thread, even after a good...
