Re: Reviving an easy to make horn instrument with potential
FYI - Open ended flutes use no more than 2 deg from center for reverse conical. The taper on a saxophone and bagpipes is 3 deg from center. Most closed ended pipes are at least 1/2 the diameter of open ended. If you look at the modern Cornet and Trumpet, the Trumpet is a straight bore throughout unt...

Re: A brief history of the MIMF
Wow, time flies. I first logged onto MIMF back in 1998. Back then it was called "Musicians and Instrument Makers Forum" and that was until (I think) the guy who ran the Woodwind Quarterly site closed down his forum then from that time the name that should have always been stayed with the f...

Re: PVC Pipe Instrument - Could use a little help!
Tuning is simply achieved by cutting the instrument in half just below the blade top the top tonehole. A PVC coupler can be used to add to the length of the instrument. Simply slide it out and the tuning goes flat. Normally, the instrument is made slightly sharp so that you can always have a certain...

Re: How to keep a whistle between centers
When I make Native Flutes, on the tailstock end I make pieces of PVC that fit inside the bore of the blank being turned. It then has a center hole which rests with the live center's point.

C Clarinet from Bb Instrument
I'm kicking around the idea of making a C Clarinet by taking apart a broken Bb Clarinet. The idea is to: 1. Take the keys off. 2. Make a new body in C based on the Bb design using some calculations and scaling and comparing the two methods. 3. Modify the keys where necessary to fit the new body. I'm...

Chromatic Flutes/Whistles
I have a spreadsheet to share: http://www.kingsmills.us/flute-chromatic.xls This calculates toneholes for flutes/whistles that have a mixture of open holes and normally closed keys like the 19th century flutes. Cylindrical bore - doesn't do conical. Note: It does assume that you know some of the bas...

Deb,
We all thank you, you ran the Forum very well all those years.
I was on staff for about a year or so around the time Henry and Mirjan were there as well.
Hope to see this new ember take light and continue.
