I just ordered ebonized Pear wood (black) from John Bogdanovich, same size and price than LMI but, hopefully better quality than Poplar. Shipping is less than $4. I couldn't see long sheets in woodcraft.
Thanks every one!

Thanks Barry, I didn't find what I'm looking for in ebay this time. I'll keep an eye on it. Bob, I have never used the fiber sheets. I guess once on hands I would know about its weakness. I'll probably avoid them altogether. I always scrape veneers when structurally strength is need it. I had a back...

Re: Venner supplies
For domestic wood like maple or walnut, I just go to Woodcraft and by the packs of sheets (usually 36” by 8” or so). I buy the colored stuff (black or white for me) and the exotics from LMI. Woodcraft’s price on the colored stuff isn’t any better than LMI. I forgot! Do you buy the wood or the fiber...

Re: Venner supplies
What thickness are you after? Figured grain, or just different colors of wood? Hi Brian, Plain natural maple or any other white wood, and dyed black wood, at around 0.5 mm thick ( I guess 0.020 of a inch) and I’m open to other natural colors. I build classical guitars so I need quite a bit of it fo...

Venner supplies
Hi everyone, I'm wondering where people here get their veneer for purfling, rosettes, etc. I just can't find it affordable. I may be spoiled, but I expect to get a square meter of natural maple or black at $20 or less. I used to get it from madinter or maderas barber, but I can't wait several weeks....

That is a good oneBill Raymond wrote:Bryan, perhaps you're thinking of Chuck Tweedy's April Fools Day post.

Seriously, I have a small stack of wood in south Spain, and last time I went for vacations I found a cocobolo set full of worms holes. So I'd say its a real concern at least in warm weather areas.

Re: Worm holes in rosewood backs
I’ve seen it a few times in rosewood I’ve purchased. Rosewood is very forgiving for this type of thing. If you sand around it to pack some dust in the hole and put a drop of CA glue on it, you’ll have a hard time finding it again after you sand the repair. If you think that it actually happened in ...

Worm holes in rosewood backs
Hi! I just discovered some annoying worm holes in two sets of Indian rosewood, and I wonder if that happened in my shop or before. I live in south Maine, and never had this problem before. I thought I didn't have to worry about, but now I am :? Do you guys take special precautions regarding insects ...

Reglue plastic bindings. What glue?
Hi there,
I have a Martin guitar with loose plastic bindings for repair. I know there is some cement for that use, but I'm afraid to damage the finish.
Any other options?
And the bindings are short now, so what is the solution, heat, new bindings?
Thanks.

Yes, It was blue tape, and the heat was minimal, it barely heated anything.

Re: tape melted in lacquer finish
Mario, You are probably thinking on average thickness, but mine is super thin because I was afraid to choke the guitar. (it's a lattice braced classical guitar) My plan was spray more if necessary after trying the guitar. So my hesitation now is sand the whole top or spray more after a light sanding...

tape melted in lacquer finish
Hi folks I'm finishing a guitar top with lacquer for the first time, but I just screw it up while gluing the bridge. I usually glue down my bridges on a white top, but this time I decided to change, thinking that lacquer is harder that shellac. I don't know what I was thinking, but I heated a bit th...

Re: Gun for water based lacquer
Hi Manel, You may want to do some test pieces to see how well the waterborne lacquer adheres to the shellac. If it doesn't bind with it well it may show scratches even more. I guess you mean cracks rather than scratches. Anyways...I bought the gun and made some tests. I don't think I'm going to lik...

Re: Plaster of paris for mold making?
Plaster of Paris has been used for many kind of molds. I have seen people making molds using PP to make fiber glass part for cars. As well used for cast in arms legs etc. So it shouldn't shrink much IMO
