Re: Taking back of ES-335
Thanks for the response Freeman. One other quick question - of those 3 guitars which has your favorite plugged-in sound? Bob, these were built some period of time apart so its a little difficult to compare The 335 with the small block was built for a left handed player so I really couldn't play it ...

Re: Taking back of ES-335
Those guitars are really quite different. The one with the big block and the hollow body have SD jazz pickups, the small block has StewMac PAf copies, Both 335 style have gone to other owners, the hollow body is my personal jazz style guitar. Each is inspired by different Gibson guitars but none is ...

Re: Taking back of ES-335
I forgot to add to my first post that you will also need to route the binding off the back to access the glue seam, then replace it when you are done. The neck heel will overlap the binding which is why I would also remove the neck, but you can maybe work around that.

Re: Taking back of ES-335
Having built a couple of semi hollow electric guitars I think taking the back off would be a nightmare. The center block has a huge gluing foot print and I don't see any way to get either steam or heat into the joint. You would want to remove the neck first which is a daunting task in itself, the st...

Re: Floating archtop bridge on flattops
Very cool! If you ever get him to record a clip, post here! Sounds interesting a mix between the two worlds! I haven't seen the guitar for quite a few years, if it ever comes back to the shop I will not only take some sound clips, I'll run the spectrum analyzing software and see if I can see anythi...

Re: Left-Handed Acoustic Guitars?
Lot of guitars have been converted to lefty by replacing the bridge, saddle, and nut. You can fill the saddle slot and reroute it or replace the whole bridge. Add marker dots to the other side of the neck, a new pickguard if you feel necessary IMG_0306-1.jpg If I was building from scratch I would mi...

Re: Floating archtop bridge on flattops
Fernando, you have to remember that flat tops with pinned or tied bridges and archtops with floating bridges make their sounds in quite different ways. The pinned bridge "rocks" the top around the bridge axis pulling the lower bout up and pushing the area towards the sound hole down where ...

Re: First Neck forming - 28.625" Baritone maple back
For what it is worth, I find it very helpful to make a couple of templates for each neck I make. You can either find neck cross sections on plans if you are trying to duplicated another guitar, or using a little tool made for duplicating moldings you can make your own from a neck you like. I also es...

Re: Thick binding in cutaway of Gibson archtop
I ran into that when I built my LP clone and just bent the binding to follow the up and down - it stays 1/4 tall. Then a week or so ago I got a lovely Andersen archtop across my bench and he does it on both the top and bottom.

Re: LP style neck tenon
Pictures would help a lot. What I do is open the jpeg with MS Paint, click on the option to resize. For my photos 25 percent is about right, then save it (I do it under a different name). Once resized you should be able to go to the full editor and attach it to your thread. I've built several LP sty...

Re: Building some size O guitars-- tips? trying to fasttrack it (having a baby)
I have made three "small concert" aka "parlor" guitars from the Scott Antes plans and using short scale premade necks from LMII. One was for my daughter, and a friend's daughter, I kept the third for myself. At one point in the past LMII offered this as an option for their kit wi...

Re: 12 String Top radius?
Joel, I have built two 12 strings, a long Martin scale OM sized guitar that is tune two or three steps down and a 26 inch scale 000 that is tuned to C. I also have an old Martin D12-28. The Martin has a bit of a belly and the neck has been reset to whatever dome the top has, the other two were built...

Re: No f-holes?
Along with the f-holes functioning as Alan discusses above it is my understanding that they have another function - weakening the top along the recurve on each side of the bridge. I recently built an acoustic archtop and did a lot of tapping with some spectrum analyzing software, when the f-holes we...

Re: ES175/L4CES
Hans, I have built two acoustic guitars sort of like what you are suggesting. The first was built from the ALS ES-173 plans but were intended to be totally acoustics so I used a single piece of spruce thicknessed to slightly less than 1/8 inch and X braced it in a 16 foot radius dish. That gives a l...
