Re: Measuring Hide Glue Temperature
Thank you for that safety warning. I wouldn't have thought that was necessary but good to know.

Re: Measuring Hide Glue Temperature
Thanks much for the replies and information. Today I decided to do some adjustments on the Hold Heet pot thermostat. You have to open the unit up, but it's very simple to do. After a number of very slight trial and error adjustments, I was able to get the following readings on the water and actual g...

Measuring Hide Glue Temperature
My question is about measuring the temperature of hot hide glue. I am new to this and I'm using the Hold Heet glue pot. Assume that I place properly mixed glue into a small glass or plastic jar and place the jar inside the pot. Water is added to the pot to about the level of the glue in the jar. Man...

Re: Gap Filler For Bolteron Binding
Thanks for the suggestions. Last resort I will try the splice method. I tried the MEK with negative results. It softened but doesn't melt the material, same as Acetone. I'm experimenting with an $2.98 bottle of clear PVC primer ( the kind used to prime PVC pipes ). It softens the material according ...

Gap Filler For Bolteron Binding
To fill a gap between the ends of binding, I know that regular plastic binding can be melted into a filler paste by soaking it in acetone. Can the same be done with Bolteron binding material ? Or because it's a PVC plastic, is a different solvent required ?

Curly Mango Boards
I managed to have some curly koa and mango boards shipped home from my visits to Hawaii some 25 years ago. I pulled these boards from my stash recently and was wondering if they may be suitable for resawing into guitar back and sides. I attached a couple of images. One board seems to have edge grain...

Re: Slight Cupping In Maple Sides
Thanks for the responses from everyone. I suspect had I continued the construction process right away insteads of leaving the sides in the mold for a few weeks after bending, the cupping may have been avoided. But from the responses I think I can remedy the problem. Thanks.

Re: Slight Cupping In Maple Sides
The center of the side is flat against the form, but the upper inch or so at the edges are cupping towards the inside. Sucking in I guess !

Slight Cupping In Maple Sides
I successfully bent a pair of curly maple sides in a fox-style bender using a heating blanket. After being in the form for a period of several weeks and thoroughly dried, I noticed that the sides have cupped slightly across their width, mostly in the lower bout. Is there a recommended way to re-flat...

Maple and Herringbone Prohibited ?
As I embark on my second guitar build, I anticipate using maple back and sides with a sitka top. As I consider my options for bindings and purfling, I realize that I don't think I've ever seen a maple guitar with herringbone purfling on the top. Herringbone is frequently seen on rosewood guitars, so...

Re: Fox Bender - Fixing a Crease in Bent Side
Thanks for the advice everyone. I was able to steam out a good portion of the crease. Now I'll follow the suggestions to reform it in the form.

Fox Bender - Fixing a Crease in Bent Side
I bent an Indian Rosewood OM side very successfully using my fox style bender ( using light bulbs ). Really worked well. Unfortunately on the second side, the center of the waist caul apparently sunk slightly too far down into the mold, probably because I screwed the caul down too hard and overtight...

OM Style Bracing Question
In the OM plans I have ( from LMI ), the two lower braces for the back plate are shown as 3/4" wide by 1/4" in height. In the plans, they appear to be a flat piece of bracing across the width of the back plate. Is it likely that these braces also have to have their bottoms radiused like th...
