Re: Electric Octave Mandolin Build
Brian, thank you for your suggestions. I am still working on applying the finish. Once everything is completed, I will spray lacquer to protect the finish and even out the gloss. Since my last post, I have been working on applying finish to the neck/body join and the back of the headstock. This has ...

Re: Electric Octave Mandolin Build
Andrew, thank you for your suggestion. I feel that eventually I will replace the tailpiece I used with something smaller. The fretboard is rosewood. I can't remember the original scale that it had, but I removed the first three or four fret slots to arrive at a scale close to an octave mandolin. I h...

Re: Electric Octave Mandolin Build
Bryan, thank you for your comment. I've decided not to cut the 12 string anchor tailpiece, mostly because I'm unfamiliar with how to cut and drill brass. I think for my first octave mandolin build, using the tailpiece the way it is should be OK. I've begun to apply finish. I'm going for a kind of su...

I've taken a few more photos. This is the headstock. OM 11.jpg This is the general mock-up. I've started to apply the finish. I will add a few photos of that process if there is interest. OM10.jpg This last photo shows the access to adjust the truss rod. OM 12.jpg Comments and questions welcomed.

Electric Octave Mandolin Build
For several months, I've been building an electric octave mandolin. It's been and continues to be quite a challenge. I normally build electric guitars. Now I'm at the point where I need to start thinking about applying finish. Before beginning that, however, I'd like to share a few photos of where t...

The only piece of hardware I can help you with is a source for the string trees used on the Moderne. Go to Ebay and search "Gibson Moderne String guides set of four".

Diggin' the '60s vibe.
One question: Do rocker switches need to be grounded? I ask because I plan to use some, and I see no where to make a connection.

Re: Seeking suggestions on how to dispose of cyanoacrylate glue
I'd like to thank everyone who replied to my question. I now have a better idea how to dispose of my old bottles of CA glue.

Seeking suggestions on how to dispose of cyanoacrylate glue
I can never finish a bottle of CA glue before it goes bad. For this reason, I have several bottles that still have a lot left in them. Does anyone have suggestions for disposing these bottles and their contents? I've read to let it absorb into something like sand or to polymerize with water. Any rea...

Re: Wilkinson products?
The Wilkinson turners I bought were from Guitarheads.net. One set had a bushing that wouldn't screw down far enough into the housing to be tight on a headstock. The other set had one tuner in which the post just sort of flopped around in the housing. They sent replacements after receiving the ones I...

Re: Wilkinson products?
I am of the belief that even products from the same manufacturer may not the same in different stores. For example, the CTS pots that you buy from one online store may not be the same as the ones you buy from Stewmac. The tolerances with the Stewmac pots may be better and also the material used. (Th...

Re: New guitar build
Hans, thank you for your comment and interest. It is indeed a fretless guitar. I've been wanting to build one for a couple of years. The body is made out of a wood called amargo, also known as bitter ash. The neck is maple. I'm not sure what wood the fretboard is. It could be black palm or wenge. I ...

Re: Need to add new lead wire to Carvin humbucker
Mark, Joshua, and David thank you for your replies and the links to information about pickup wiring color codes. I'm glad I can add the fourth wire. I believe I will wire the pickup the way it shows in one of the links that David included.
Thank you again. Perry

Need to add new lead wire to Carvin humbucker
My question is in regard to the humbucker I mentioned in the post "Possible Ground Problem". I have removed enough of the tape around the coils to expose the wires. Since the pickup's lead wire is short, my thinking is to replace the wire starting from the wires coming from the coils plus ...

Re: New guitar build
Alexander and James, thanks for your comments and questions. The finish is a combination of different oils and lacquer that I have mixed together. I live overseas, and it is often difficult to know what finish products I am buying, and the brand names that I am used to are not available. This is why...
