Re: Alternative to wood on solid body
I'm with Alan on this one. In terms of deforestation, instrument makers are not even the tip of the iceberg. Much higher is stuff like cosmetics (perfume), lumber, and furniture. Brazil (sorry) famously destroyed much of their precious rosewood reserves in a shortsighted bid to make money. They cut ...

2024- what happened this year in your life?
Dear MIMF,
I haven't really been building since my son was born, but being a dad has been priceless.
In the meantime, my little dental office is doing all sorts of things.
And...I'll be having a daughter at the end of the year.
What have you been up to this year?

I'd recommend Etsy, facebook marketplace, Craigslist, and local cafes/music stores.
My main concern is that shipping is crazy expensive.

LMI closed. Seemed like a class act
Hey everyone,
I just found out that Luthier's Mercantile closed.
It's pretty interesting to see how they did it in a very classy manner.
They connected future/prior clients to Stewmac and other affiliates.
It's very rare for me to see a company consider their customers after closing.

I'm in Alameda, California.
You're welcome to come over for gelato when the rains clear.
My neighbors are just very stupid and shortsighted.

Re: Building instruments, while having young kids
My neighbors believed that my 100 year old pipe "tresspassed" onto their property.
They dug it up. Capped it. Filled it with concrete to "protect their own."
It was pretty stupid.

Stew Mac already body built kit? Thinking of ideas for neighbors' kids
Dear MIMF, I've been trying to think as a dad, instead of as a single guy. I've been thinking of of getting some of my neighbors' kids involved in guitar building. TBH, I'm not sure how I'd justify things...but was thinking of trying to find something simple, satisfying, and doesn't need much tools/...

Hey Bryan,
Thanks for starting this thread.
My new neighbor ended up being my high school classmate.
His younger son is into guitars.
Maybe I'll build with him one day.

Re: Cordless setup?
As for fine details (cutting soundboards, etc), I was gonna just use hand tools.
Fret saw, Japanese pull saw, chisels, planes, knives, etc.

Cordless setup?
This is a weird question. Does anyone build with a cordless tool and hand tool setup? My new garage doesn't have many power outlets, and probably shares one 120V 15 A circuit. I'm thinking of doing the power tool stuff outdoors, and using hand tools for fine tuning things. At my friend's workshop (w...

Hey Jarno,
I'm psyched about your project, as I was/am in the same boat.
I'm building a bass for myself, since I could find a bass I liked (too heavy) at what I'm willing to pay (under $2k).
Please continue to post pics! I'm sure it'll be great!

Re: Building instruments, while having young kids
Update. Kiddo is 6 months old! He started crawling! He also seems to really like music, so I plan to build him (and some church buddies' kids) some toys (like a small hand drum). My wife is also keep on getting me back to building, I'll be building her a guitar. Anyways, I'm thinking of documenting ...
